Swakopmund Landmarks and Colonial Sights
German colonists made Swakopmund their harbour in 1892, and the town centre still carries that history in its buildings, from the beachfront to the old administrative streets. The landmarks sit close together, so you can see most of them on foot in a morning. Overcast skies are common early in the day, and the sea air is cool at any time of year.
Landmarks in a short walking radius
- The jetty. About 260 m long and made of iron and concrete, it was begun in 1912 after a wooden jetty finished in 1905 suffered woodworm damage. The plan was for 640 m, but construction stopped far short, and it never carried the cargo it was meant for. Since its 2010 restoration, walkers can use it, and a seafood restaurant sits at the end. The Gondwana Collection article covers its story.
- The Mole. Work began on this breakwater in September 1899. Its small harbour opened in 1903 and then silted up. Today the Mole is a pleasant strip for strolling and watching the waves, though the water itself is cold with rip currents and shorebreak.
- The lighthouse. Raised to its present height in 1910 after going up in 1902, it is often given as 28 m tall. Visitors cannot go in.
- Woermannhaus and Damara Tower. The building houses the public library and an art gallery. A small fee gets you up the tower for a view of the town. Its construction date is given differently by different writers, so skip the year.
- Kristall Galerie. Open since 1998, it displays a quartz cluster around 3 m tall and roughly 14 tonnes, found in 1985 at the Otjua mine near Karibib. Entry costs a fee.
- Altes Gefängnis. The old prison on Nordring Street dates from 1909 and has been a national monument since 1973. Admire the exterior without expecting to enter.
- Swakopmund Museum. Dr Alfons Weber founded it in 1951, and it stands on the beachfront by the lighthouse. Hours are about 10:00 to 17:00 and entry is about N$30, so check. It is listed on museums.com.na .
Photography tips
Morning fog can soften the jetty and the old buildings, and a clear afternoon gives stronger colour on the walls. The tide and the swell change the Mole’s look from hour to hour.
Closed attraction
The National Marine Aquarium is shut and has been since November 2023 because of structural repairs.
