Things to Do in Swakopmund: Dunes and Skydiving
Namibia’s coastal adventure town packs desert and ocean activities into a small area. Use this page as a quick menu, then read the longer pages linked at the bottom for detail. Costs are quoted in N$ (Namibian dollars, interchangeable with South African rand at one to one), and the fog that rolls in off the cold Benguela Current often keeps mornings grey, so layers help.
Quick menu
- Sandboarding on the dunes, lying down or standing up.
- Quad biking in the permitted dune corridors.
- Tandem skydiving over the desert and coast.
- A guided morning in the Living Desert.
- Dawn ballooning above the dunes.
- Dune paragliding south of town.
- Dolphin and seal cruises, which sail from Walvis Bay rather than from Swakopmund.
Sandboarding
Adventure operators in town run both styles on the nearby dunes. Lie-down boarding is the usual first try, while stand-up riding takes more balance and a few falls. Ask each company about minimum ages, equipment and whether transport from your lodging is included.
Quad biking
Anyone riding on their own must carry a free dune permit and sticker, which the MEFT offices in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay issue. Quads need to be licensed and helmets are compulsory. Riders may use only the central dune belt, reached by corridors at Langstrand, Dolfynstrand and Dune 7. The gravel plains, the Swakop River bed, fenced land and the shoreline up to Pelican Point are all closed. Booking a guided outing removes the paperwork. Check that your insurance covers the sport, as the UK government safety advice recommends.
Skydiving
Ground Rush Adventures is the main operator, jumping at the Swakopmund airfield. The choices are roughly 10,000, 12,000 and 15,000 ft, with freefall of about 35, 45 or 60 seconds. Expect a weight limit near 100 kg and a requirement for written parental consent if you are under 18.
The Living Desert
On a Living Desert Adventures morning, a guide drives you into the dunes to find tiny residents. The “Little 5” usually include the Namib sand gecko, Peringuey’s adder, the Namaqua chameleon and the shovel-snouted lizard. Hotel pick-up is about 08:00 and you are back between noon and 13:00. In 2025/26 the price was around N$1,000 for an adult and N$550 for a child of 12 or under, park fees included, paid in cash. The full terms are on the operator website .
Ballooning and paragliding
Hot Air Ballooning Namibia CC takes people up over the dunes: budget around 4 hours with transfers, of which roughly 45 minutes is airborne. Wind can cancel a flight at short notice. Paragliding takes place on the dunes south of Swakopmund, and you should confirm that a provider is licensed before you fly.
Cold water warning
The ocean here is cold with rip currents and a heavy shorebreak, so swim only between the flags with lifeguards present and never alone.
