Swakopmund Town Walks and Township Visits
Two kinds of walking suit this town: a self-guided stroll around the colonial centre and the seafront, and a guided visit to a township in the east. The centre is flat and compact, which keeps distances short. Take a windproof layer, because the breeze off the cold Atlantic is sharp even on sunny days.
Self-guided centre walk
Plan on a morning, with stops.
- Woermannhaus and Damara Tower: now the public library and an art gallery, with a tower you can climb for a small fee.
- Altes Gefängnis: the old prison of 1909 on Nordring Street, a national monument since 1973. Enjoy it from the pavement.
- Kaiserliches Bezirksgericht: the imperial district court building, dating from 1901.
- The lighthouse: built in 1902 and raised in 1910, visible from outside only.
Street signs in the centre include Sam Nujoma Avenue, and the grid layout makes navigation simple. Pictures and notes on the architecture are on Swakop.com .
Seafront walk
Follow the promenade past the Swakopmund Museum, founded in 1951 and open about 10:00 to 17:00 with entry near N$30, then out onto the Mole, the breakwater started in 1899. Continue to the jetty, an iron and concrete pier of about 260 m with a seafood restaurant at the end. The promenade is easy walking, though the surf carries rip currents, so stay out of the water.
Guided township walk
Mondesa lies east of the centre, and the DRC, short for Democratic Resettlement Community, is further out. Local operators lead the tours, among them Mondesa Township Tours, on foot or by vehicle depending on the format. A typical listing is about US$80 for an adult. Visit in daylight with a guide, since British government advice is not to enter townships after dark without local knowledge. The FCDO safety guidance explains.
Timing a walk
Fog is common in the morning and often lifts by midday, so a late morning start gives clearer views of the buildings and the sea. The sun is stronger in the afternoon but the wind off the water stays cool. Lunch fits easily between the old town and the seafront, because the two areas are only a few streets apart, and a stop at one of the German bakeries breaks up the route. Museum and tower opening times vary, so check them before building a route around either.
Walking tips
- Wear comfortable shoes with grip for the jetty and the Mole.
- Start at the beach end and finish in the centre for lunch.
- Take small denominations. Rand notes are widely accepted here too.
- Keep valuables out of sight, as in any town.
