Heraklion Multi-Day Routes Across Crete
Heraklion has the main airport on Crete and a large ferry port, so it is where many longer trips begin. The sections below describe four patterns: the east-west road trip, bases in other towns, ferries off the island and a sample itinerary. Always add driving time, since Crete’s roads are slower than the distances suggest.
East or west along the north coast
You can head west from Heraklion to Rethymno and then Chania, with about 135 km between the capital and Chania. Or you can drive east to Agios Nikolaos and on to Sitia. Treat each leg as a night or two in a new town. On Crete you drive on the right, the northern coastal highway carries heavy traffic, and mountain roads demand patience.
Chania as a base for the west
Two famous west-coast trips are better done from Chania than from Heraklion. The first is Samaria Gorge, in the White Mountains, about 175 km and roughly 3 hours by coach from Heraklion. Hikers cover around 16 km to Agia Roumeli, which has no road, then take a boat to Sougia or Chora Sfakion and a bus back. The usual season is early May to the end of October, depending on weather, and the gorge is shut from 1 November. The fee is about EUR 10, and tickets are sold on the official portal . The second is Elafonisi, at the south-west tip, 200 km or more from Heraklion and around 4 hours by road.
Sitia as a base for the east
The palace at Zakros is about 175 km from Heraklion and takes 3.5 to 4 hours by road. It is one of the six Minoan Palatial Centres that UNESCO inscribed in July 2025. A night in or near Sitia saves a very long day.
Leaving the island by sea
- Overnight to Piraeus: operated by Minoan Lines and ANEK, taking roughly 8 to 10 hours.
- Fast boats to Santorini: about 1.5 to 2 hours in summer, with few or no sailings in winter.
- Other islands: sailings are seasonal, so check the operator’s timetable for your date.
A sample route
- Day one in Heraklion: the Archaeological Museum (EUR 20 in summer, EUR 12 in winter) and Knossos (EUR 20).
- Day two: a bus from Station A to Rethymno.
- Days three and four: Chania, with Samaria if the gorge is open.
Heat and dry vegetation raise the chance of wildfires between April and October, so follow closure notices.
