Family Days in Kairouan: Swords, Anchors, Makroudh
Kairouan is a calm religious city with few attractions built for children. A family visit works if you pick two or three short stops, move early and keep the afternoon free. Summer heat is the main thing to plan around, with highs above 40 C common in July and August.
The best stop for kids: Sidi Amor Abada
This small museum in the Abada suburb, near the Zitouna oratory, houses oversized wrought-iron swords, huge anchors and chests that came from the Ghar el-Melh naval base. Children respond to the sheer scale of the objects. It opens 08:00 to 14:00 in summer and 09:00 to 16:00 in winter, and shuts every Monday. Entry rates moved on 1 April 2026, so ask at the desk. Pupils and students pay about 2 TND with a card. Take a taxi from the medina and agree the fare first.
A museum for older children
Raqqada’s National Museum of Islamic Art lies roughly 10 to 12 km away in a former presidential residence. Its famous blue Quran is on the first floor. It is a quiet place and best for children who can look carefully for twenty minutes. It is closed Mondays and follows the same seasonal hours as the other museum.
Pastry tasting
Makroudh is the local date-filled semolina pastry. Walk into a pastry shop, say how much you want to spend, and ask for a mixed box. Children can compare the fillings, and the cost is small. Ask whether you may see the pastry being made.
A short medina loop
Keep the walk to an hour in the morning, on the main lanes. The ground is flat, which suits a stroller or tired legs. Stay close together, and if someone invites you up to a rooftop or a carpet shop, a smiling no is all that is needed.
What is better skipped
Bir Barouta, the old camel well, was reported closed in 2025. A blindfolded camel turns the wheel in cramped conditions, and some visitors find that distressing, so it is not a petting stop. The Aghlabid Basins are under restoration, with works since July 2025, so do not plan a picnic or a playground visit there.
El Jem as an outing
Older children may enjoy El Jem, about 70 km away, where a huge Roman amphitheatre stands. There is no direct public transport from Kairouan, so plan on a private car or a tour. See family-friendly day tours for choices.
Everyday tips
- Carry a refillable bottle, sun hats and small notes in dinars.
- Dress modestly, with covered shoulders and knees, and teach children to keep their voices low near mosques.
- No train serves Kairouan, so families arrive by louage or bus from Tunis or Sousse.
- The Raqqada museum page lists official hours.
