Day Trips to Chobe, Livingstone and the Falls
Kazungula is a good starting point for day trips because it sits close to four countries. The catch is that most trips cross a border, so a day out is as much about timing the checkpoints as covering the distance.
At a glance
- Chobe National Park, Botswana: Kasane is about 8 km west of the bridge.
- Livingstone, Zambia: about 70 km on the M10.
- Victoria Falls, Zambian side: roughly 80 km from the bridge.
- Victoria Falls town, Zimbabwe: 80 to 90 km from Kasane through the border, about one and a half to two hours door to door.
- Impalila Island, Namibia: about 15 minutes by boat from Kasane.
Chobe National Park
Crossing from Zambia into Botswana is the first step. The KAZA UniVisa permits a day visit to Botswana through Kazungula, while an ordinary Zambian visa does not, so check which one you hold. Once in Kasane, pick a three-hour river cruise in the morning or an open-vehicle drive from about 3:00 to 6:00 pm. Pay the park fee, about BWP 270 per adult per day from April 2026, in cash at Sedudu Gate.
Livingstone and the Victoria Falls
The drive to Livingstone and the Falls is long enough to be a full day trip, not a quick hop. Expect roughly an hour to an hour and a quarter of driving each way beyond the border. Once there, you can visit the Livingstone Museum, the oldest and largest museum in Zambia, set up in 1934, and Mukuni Village, a working Leya village near the Falls with a curio market. Check museum hours in advance.
Victoria Falls town
Operators in Kasane run day tours into Zimbabwe. The KAZA UniVisa, if you need it, is valid across Zambia and Zimbabwe, so combining both sides of the Falls is straightforward.
Impalila Island
A short boat ride from Kasane brings you to this Namibian island. Namibian immigration is dealt with at Kasane. The island suits birdwatchers.
Trips to skip
The Okavango Delta, Moremi and Maun lie more than 600 km away, so they need an overnight stay, not a day.
Border and driving tips
- Pack a passport valid for six months beyond arrival, with two blank pages for Zambia and three for Botswana.
- Expect a per-vehicle toll if you drive across the Kazungula Bridge, and check the current rate.
- The bridge is busy with trucks. It is a crossing, so keep moving rather than stopping for photographs.
- Follow officials’ directions at the border post, which is announced as open 24 hours from February 2026.
- Keep to wildlife rules and normal precautions, and check the latest entry rules before you travel.
