Koblenz Activities on the Rhine and Moselle
What to do depends on the month
Koblenz has two sets of activities. One runs from spring to the end of October and depends on boats, the cable car and open-air sites. The other runs all year and is mostly indoors or on foot. Check which set you are in before you plan.
Spring to October
Cable car. The Seilbahn Koblenz links the riverbank near St. Kastor with the fortress plateau, a ride of 890 metres over the Rhine. In 2026 the last operating day was 1 November, with closure on 2 and 3 November and a winter break after that. Reopening dates for 2027 appear on the Seilbahn Koblenz homepage . A fortress and cable car combination ticket is 21.90 EUR for adults.
River cruises. Sightseeing boats from Gilles Personenschifffahrt and Marksburgschifffahrt leave the Koblenz landing stages for about an hour. They pass the Deutsches Eck, enter the lower Moselle as far as the Balduin Bridge and come back down the Rhine past the Electoral Palace and Oberwerth. The KD winter timetable, valid 19 October 2026 to 2 April 2027, has no Koblenz departures.
Cycling. The Mosel-Radweg ends at Koblenz after about 240 km in Germany. A short outing goes along the Moselle’s right bank to Güls and Winningen and back, about 25 km on flat asphalt. Bicycle hire is available near the main station.
Paddling. Canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding take place on the Moselle above the Koblenz lock. The Rhine is not an option for paddlers, because it is a commercial shipping channel with strong currents and wash from large vessels.
Wine
The Terrassenmosel is the steep, terraced stretch of the lower Moselle around Koblenz. Winningen and Koblenz-Lay have wineries that run cellar tastings of dry Riesling. Cash is useful in the smaller cellars.
All year
Fortress. Festung Ehrenbreitstein is open throughout the year. Adult entry is 10 EUR, and winter hours are about 11:00 to 16:00. From 19 November 2026 to 10 January 2027 a Christmas Garden is planned at the fortress, according to a secondary source.
Taverns and food. Traditional taverns in the Old Town serve Himmel un Äd, black pudding with mashed potato and apple compote, at about 14 to 17 EUR a plate. Some take cash only.
Marksburg. The castle at Braubach stays open all winter, from 11:00 to 16:00. The right-bank train is out of service until about 12 December 2026, so allow for replacement buses.
Small stops
The Schängelbrunnen in the Town Hall courtyard is free. The boy spits water at intervals, so wait a few minutes and keep clear of the jet if you want to stay dry.
Safety
Do not enter the Rhine at Koblenz. Ships create suction and wash close to the bank, and there is a strong current where the Moselle joins it. Normal city precautions are enough for the streets.
