Kairouan Activities: Museums, Pastries, Carpets
Kairouan is compact and best done in a single early start. The sights run on short opening hours, so the order of the day matters more than the length of the list. Here is a plan that works with the real schedules.
08:00 to 10:00: the Great Mosque
Begin at the Great Mosque, also known as the Mosque of Uqba or Sidi Oqba. Visitors who are not Muslim stay out of the prayer hall, and the open doors give a clear look at the interior. The courtyard is where you can walk. Summer hours start at 07:30 and run to 14:00, while winter and Ramadan hours run from 08:00 to 14:00. On Fridays the visit ends at 12:00. Local listings sometimes give an earlier Friday time, so ask at the entrance. Wear covered shoulders and knees, and women should bring a headscarf.
10:00 to 11:30: souks and pastry
The medina souks are the place to buy brass, leather goods and textiles. For food, look for makroudh, the semolina pastry stuffed with dates. Shops sell it by weight, and you can name a budget and ask for a mixed box. Fresh makroudh with mint tea is a better snack than anything on a menu.
11:30 to 12:30: a carpet visit with rules
Kairouan is known for carpets, and the Governor’s House, an 18th-century residence of the bey, is open to visitors without a fee. Weavers work on site and there is a roof terrace. Expect a firm sales pitch. Say you are only looking, ask prices before tea, and check for the handmade label. Certification comes from ONA, the Office National de l’Artisanat. Never feel obliged to buy.
Afternoon: the museums
The Sidi Amor Abada museum is in the Abada suburb, housed in a mausoleum. It displays huge wrought-iron swords, anchors and chests from the Ghar el-Melh naval base. Summer opening is 08:00 to 14:00 and winter is 09:00 to 16:00, with a Monday closure. Because summer hours end at 14:00, do this one early in hot months.
The Raqqada National Museum of Islamic Art lies roughly 10 to 12 km out, in a former presidential residence. Visit for the blue Quran in the first-floor manuscript room, a Kufic manuscript from the late 9th to mid 10th century. It follows the same hours and also closes on Monday.
Costs in 2026
Heritage entry fees changed on 1 April 2026. For a major monument, plan on 20 to 30 TND, with a further rise in January 2027, and confirm at the gate. Pupils, students and Jeune card holders pay a reduced 2 TND. Reported free days include the first Sunday of each month. Carry cash in dinars for the souks.
Heat and health
July and August regularly bring highs above 40 C. The white courtyard has little shade, so a hat, water and an early start matter. You can see a Kairouan monument page for official hours.
Getting here
There is no railway line to Kairouan. Louages and buses leave Tunis, which is about 126 km and 2 hours away, and Sousse. The stations are on the edge of the medina, so ask your hotel for the nearest one.
