Kingston Day Excursions: Mountains to Port Royal
Travel advice as of October 2026: Violent crime is high across Jamaica and is concentrated in inner-city areas. The UK FCDO and the US State Department each name places to avoid, parts of Kingston among them. Book licensed or hotel-arranged transport, stay off the streets after dark, and read gov.uk and travel.state.gov before departure.
These excursions are ordered by drive time from New Kingston, shortest first. Every one can be done and finished in a day. Anything on the north or west coast cannot: Montego Bay and Negril are each a 3.5 to 5 hour drive, and Falmouth is more than three hours away. Dunn’s River Falls at Ocho Rios is about 90 km, or 1.5 to 2 hours by the Edward Seaga Highway toll road, which makes it an Ocho Rios outing that needs its own long day. Hurricane season lasts from 1 June to 30 November. Kingston and the Blue Mountains are on the eastern side of the island, outside the zone Hurricane Melissa hit in October 2025.
About 30 minutes: Spanish Town
Jamaica’s capital for nearly 340 years, from 1534 until 1872, Spanish Town lies roughly 20 km west of Kingston on Highway 1. The Georgian square has the Old King’s House with its 1762 facade, the Old House of Assembly, the Rodney Memorial of 1790 and the Cathedral of St. Jago de la Vega. The town has a high level of inner-city crime, so go around midday and hire a driver or guide. Stay inside the square area.
40 to 50 minutes: Hellshire and Fort Clarence
Hellshire Beach in Portmore, about 25 km west, is the place for fried fish and festival. The fish shacks, including Aunt May’s and Prendy’s, let you pick a fish and have it cooked with escovitch. Erosion has shrunk the sand, weekends are packed, and no lifeguards are listed. Fort Clarence Beach Park adjoins it under Guardsman Hospitality, which has run it since 2019, with reported hours of Wednesday to Sunday from about 10:00 to 17:00 and entry near J$1,000 for adults and J$500 for children. Part of Portmore appears in the US advisory, so travel in a group, by day, with a driver.
About 45 minutes: Port Royal and Lime Cay
The Palisadoes road leads about 25 km to Port Royal. Walk the cannon walls of Fort Charles, look inside the lopsided Giddy House, then eat at Gloria’s Rendezvous on Queen Street, which is worth confirming by phone before you go. Mains cost about J$2,500 to J$4,500 (US$16 to US$30). A fisherman’s boat from Port Royal covers the 3 km to Lime Cay in around 15 minutes, for a reported fare of about J$1,500 for adults.
About 1 hour: Holywell
Holywell sits at roughly 1,200 m inside the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park, reached via Papine, Gordon Town and Newcastle. Allow for hairpin bends and a narrow road. The JCDT charges US$10 for adults and US$5 for children, according to its fee page of March 2023, and the walks range from the 250 m Blue Mahoe path to the 1.3 km Waterfall trail. Pack a warm layer, since it is 16 to 20 degrees C up there. Telephone 876-619-9807 to confirm the trails are open after the storm.
Blue Mountain Peak, at 2,256 m, is a night walk of 18.6 km return from Abbey Green, taking about seven hours, with a US$20 fee and a guide on top of that. It does not fit into a casual day out.
2.5 to 3 hours: Portland
Port Antonio and the Rio Grande lie about 95 km north-east by the Junction Road or the coast. A bamboo raft for two glides along the river for two to three hours, at a rate set in September 2023 of J$12,000 for the long run or J$10,000 for the short run per raft. Only pay at the official Berridale or Rafters Rest offices. Boston Bay is the place to eat jerk.
