Garni Activities: Temple, Gorge and Lavash
As of October 2026 the FCDO names two areas to avoid in Armenia: a 5 km strip along the eastern border with Azerbaijan, and the M16/H26 road from Ijevan to Noyemberyan. Garni sits in Kotayk, away from both. Look up gov.uk and travel.state.gov for the latest wording.

The Temple Compound
The museum-reserve is the main draw. It holds the basalt Temple of Garni, a bathhouse from the Roman era, the remains of a royal summer palace and a medieval round church, all on a promontory about 1,400 m above sea level. Opening is daily from about 10:00 until about 21:30 according to the museum-reserve. Phone +374-10-545570 to confirm. The bathhouse mosaic is being restored over several years, so you may see it only in part.
Gorge Stones
Take the road or the footpath down to the Symphony of the Stones. Walking down takes 30 to 35 minutes. Cars manage the same distance faster, though the surface is cobbled and unpaved and worth checking after rain. Hexagonal basalt columns rise from the gorge wall, and warning signs ask you not to loiter beneath loose rock.
Food With a Local Twist
Lavash, the flatbread that UNESCO lists as intangible heritage, is baked in a clay oven called a tonir. Ask your host or tour operator whether a demonstration is included. For lunch, Sergei Mot is a garden restaurant that bakes its own lavash, and Harmonia Garden GastroYard and Hotel has trout ponds. Garni Fish Restaurant is another pond-to-table choice.
Half a Day at Geghard
Geghard sits roughly 15 to 20 minutes by car from Garni and has been a UNESCO site since 2000. There is no admission charge and donations are welcome. Parking runs about 200 AMD, and opening times vary with the season. Modest clothing and a quiet voice are the courtesy at this working monastery.
Charents Arch
Between Yerevan and Garni, in the village of Voghjaberd, stands a 1957 arch designed by Rafael Israyelyan. It frames Mount Ararat, so it is worth a short halt.
Cash and Transport
Everything small is paid in Armenian dram (AMD) cash: gorge fees, parking and taxis. Garni is 25 to 30 km from Yerevan and takes 40 to 50 minutes by road.
