Islamabad Plus Taxila and Rohtas in Three Days
Advisory as of 31 October 2026. Washington rates Pakistan Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) in its 16 June 2026 update and tells travellers to avoid or reconsider trips to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. London’s Foreign Office, in advice revised on 27 October 2026, leaves Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree and Taxila off its warning lists, yet it warns against all or all but essential travel to a long list of areas elsewhere, among them parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The capital has had major attacks, including the November 2025 court bombing and the 6 February 2026 blast at a Shia mosque in Tarlai, on the city’s edge. Check the US State Department page and the Foreign Office page before booking anything. Plan for police checkpoints, road closures during protests and phone-network cuts, keep away from rallies, and keep your original passport on you.
Three days, three kinds of place
A short stay in Islamabad can combine the planned capital, a World Heritage archaeological site and a 16th-century fort.
Day 1: the capital
Begin at Faisal Mosque, which is free, with modest dress and shoes off. Then visit the Shakarparian museums, which close Mondays and charge foreign adults about PKR 2,000 each, and finish at Daman-e-Koh for city views. Details are on Lok Virsa .
Day 2: Taxila
Taxila is about 35 km northwest and has UNESCO status from 1980 (listing ). The museum costs foreigners about PKR 500, with opening hours that vary by source, and separate sites may add their own fees.
Day 3: Rohtas Fort
Sher Shah Suri built the fort from 1541 to 1548, near Dina. The road from Islamabad is roughly 110 km, and the trip takes 2 to 2.5 hours. Fees for foreigners are quoted from PKR 500 to PKR 1,500.
Beds
The Islamabad Serena Hotel is on Khayaban-e-Suhrawardy. Search more hotels on Booking.com .
Heading to Lahore
Lahore is reached by the M-2 motorway, around 4 to 5 hours by road. It lies in Punjab.
What the north involves
The Karakoram Highway to those towns passes the Mansehra to Chilas stretch, where the FCDO advises against all travel. The FCDO also lists Swat as do-not-travel. These are not simple add-ons.
A night in the Galliyat hills means staying in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the area the US flags. Seasonal entry bans follow snow and landslides, so any plan there stays flexible.
Before you fly
The free Visa Prior to Arrival scheme was suspended in January 2026, so most visitors apply for a paid e-Visa at visa.nadra.gov.pk . The fee depends on nationality, and processing is quoted at 7 to 20 working days. The airport is 25 to 30 km southwest of the centre.
Moving around
Metrobus fares are PKR 100 on the main routes. Ride-hailing runs through Careem, Yango and inDrive. The Margalla trails make a gentle half-day: Trail 5, near F-5, in daylight and in company, with a look at the CDA adventure page for closures.
