Family Days in Koblenz: Fortress and Geyser
Plan by weather
Family time in Koblenz splits neatly into dry-day outdoor plans and backup plans for rain or heat. Most outdoor attractions are seasonal, so the weather and the calendar matter more than distance.
Dry days
Ride up to Ehrenbreitstein. The cable car from Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer crosses the Rhine and lifts families to the fortress high above the river. Ticket prices for children are low: 8.90 EUR for ages 7 to 17 on the fortress combination ticket, and nothing for under sevens. The cable car stops running after 1 November in 2026, and the cable car site gives the date it starts again.
Play on the fortress. Up on the plateau there is a climbing playground with wooden towers, rope bridges and slides. The old artillery tunnels are dark, and the 1524 cannon Greif makes a good photo stop. Allow half a day. The fortress is open all year, and winter hours of about 11:00 to 16:00 are shorter.
Watch the Schängelbrunnen. In the Town Hall courtyard, a bronze boy squirts water without warning. Children tend to wait for it, and it costs nothing.
Hot or wet days
Outdoor pool. Freibad Oberwerth, on Haydnstraße, has a 50 metre pool, a 10 metre diving platform, shallow paddling areas and a slide. Its 2026 season began on 22 May and the pool is open 08:00 to 20:00 in summer. It is closed outside the summer season.
Indoor pool. Moselbad Koblenz, on Ferdinand-Sauerbruch-Straße in Moselweiß, has pools and saunas, and it opened in August 2024. It is the plan for a wet afternoon.
Museums. The Landesmuseum inside the fortress covers photography and technology, and is covered by the same ticket as the grounds.
A day out of town
Geysir Andernach is about 20 km north. A visit has three parts: a hands-on exhibition about volcanoes, a short boat trip across the Rhine and the geyser, which shoots water as high as 60 metres. The ticket is 21.50 EUR for adults and 12.50 EUR for children up to 16, and children under 1 metre tall are free. Count on 2.5 to 3 hours. It is closed from 1 November 2026 until about late March, as the ticket page states.
For animals, the closest zoo is Zoo Neuwied, about 15 km north.
River safety
The Rhine at Koblenz carries heavy freight traffic, and the current is strong. Do not let children paddle or swim, and keep them back from the bank at the Deutsches Eck and on the promenade.
Practical notes
The old centre and the promenades are flat, which suits buggies. Tourist information in the Forum Confluentes on Zentralplatz can help with maps. Some taverns and bakery stands take only cash.
