Islamabad with Kids: Aviary, Museums and Parks
Advisory as of 31 October 2026. Washington rates Pakistan Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) in its 16 June 2026 update and tells travellers to avoid or reconsider trips to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. London’s Foreign Office, in advice revised on 27 October 2026, leaves Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree and Taxila off its warning lists, yet it warns against all or all but essential travel to a long list of areas elsewhere, among them parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The capital has had major attacks, including the November 2025 court bombing and the 6 February 2026 blast at a Shia mosque in Tarlai, on the city’s edge. Check the US State Department page and the Foreign Office page before booking anything. Plan for police checkpoints, road closures during protests and phone-network cuts, keep away from rallies, and keep your original passport on you.
Children’s options in Islamabad
Islamabad has no zoo that you can visit. Marghazar Zoo closed in December 2020, and its site now houses a wildlife rescue centre run by an NGO. The authorities have dropped plans to reopen it and propose a safari park at Malpur, which is still only a plan. These places do run:
Lake View Park and the Bird Aviary
Rawal Lake’s shore holds the Bird Aviary, with tickets of about PKR 100 for adults and PKR 50 for children. Getting into the park itself costs roughly PKR 20 to 50. Pedal and rowing boats operate when the park allows, and motorised boats have been banned by district orders more than once.
Two museums, one hill
At Shakarparian, the Pakistan Monument Museum and the Lok Virsa Heritage Museum stand close together. Foreign adults pay about PKR 2,000 at each and under-7s enter free. Both close Mondays. The Monument Museum opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 20:00, and tells the story of the Pakistan Movement and independence. Outside, the monument’s petals stand for the provinces. For tickets, see Lok Virsa .
Trains at Golra Sharif
Railway fans can visit the Golra Sharif museum. Hours run about 09:00 to 16:00, finishing at 13:00 on Fridays, and a ticket is about PKR 50, so ask at the gate.
Fatima Jinnah Park
The park in F-9 offers playgrounds and walking loops. Megazone, in F-9 Park, and the fun zone at Centaurus Mall in F-8 are indoor choices, so check them before you head out.
Walks with children
On the Margalla trails, Trail 5 near F-5 is the easier route. Leopards live in the park, so keep the group together, go in daylight, skip dawn and dusk, and finish before sunset. Wild boar and macaques also use the trails. Rain closes trails from time to time, and the CDA adventure page carries notices.
Family tips
Daman-e-Koh is a free city viewpoint where monkeys take food from hands and bags, so supervise snacks. Budget for foreign-visitor ticket prices that often run 5 to 10 times the local rate, and bring your original passport.
