Geghard Monastery Visit: What to See and Do
Geghard is a monastery carved into a cliff above the Azat River, and a visit mostly means moving slowly through stone rooms, listening and looking. This page lists the things worth doing there in the order most people meet them.
As of October 2026 the FCDO warns against travel in the 5 km strip along Armenia’s eastern border with Azerbaijan and on the M16/H26 road linking Ijevan and Noyemberyan. Geghard sits in Kotayk, outside that strip and off that road. The latest wording is on gov.uk .

Things to do
Walk through the main church and entrance hall. The Katoghike dates from 1215 and was built under the Zakarian brothers Zakare and Ivane. The gavit that leads into the complex went up between 1215 and 1225.
Step into the rock-cut churches. The Avazan church, carved in the 1240s, holds the spring. A second rock-cut church and the main zhamatun, with the Proshyan family chapel, date to 1283.
Climb to the upper chamber. An external stair leads to a rock-cut room dated 1288, where visitors hum quietly to hear a long, rich echo. Wait for other people to finish before you start.
Visit the spring. Pilgrims drink from the water, fill bottles and toss coins as a wish. Treat it as part of worship.
Look for khachkars. Cross-stones cover parts of the cliff face and hillside outside. A passage lined with them leads to a 13th-century burial vault cut from the rock.
Taste local snacks. Stalls by the gate sell gata and sujukh.
Try a lavash class. About 10 km down the valley in Garni, Sergei Mot lets guests watch lavash flatbread baked on site, and Noah’s Garden is reported by reviewers to host demonstrations and workshops. UNESCO added lavash baking to its intangible heritage list in 2014.
Etiquette in an active church
The monastery belongs to the Armenian Apostolic Church. Lower your voice, do not interrupt services, and ask permission before photographing worshippers. Candle lighting is a prayer act and not a photo opportunity.
Getting there
Taxis from Yerevan take about 40 to 50 minutes. Marshrutka 284 from the Gai bus station goes to Goght, the last stop, which is about 3.8 km from the monastery, so allow for a walk of about an hour, a lift or a taxi. Check times at the station or on t-armenia.com . Carry cash for parking and stalls.
