Family Days on the Ksamil Coast
Families do well in Ksamil when plans stay simple: a shallow beach, one outing a day and strict water rules around the islets. This page lists what suits children, what to watch and what it costs in lek (ALL). Summer is the working season, and many places close from roughly October to April.
Where small children can paddle
Lori Beach, around 700 m west of the village centre, has shallow, sheltered water, and himara.net recommends it for small children. It is a paid beach. A pair of loungers with an umbrella is about 1,500 to 3,000 ALL in peak summer. Ask if you are renting by flat fee or by minimum spend.
Other shores bring sea urchins and sharp rock. Water shoes for everyone in the family save a lot of grief.
Islet swims need an adult
The closest islet is about 70 to 100 m offshore, so older children may ask to swim over. The channel has no lifeguards. In July and August pedalos, water taxis and motorboats cross it, and after about 14:00 the water gets rougher. Go with a child, not instead of one, and aim for early morning. A water taxi costs about EUR 5 to 7 return in high season.
Butrint for explorers
The ruins are open air, with shady paths through woodland and room to run. Entry costs 1,000 ALL for adults and 500 ALL for ages 12 to 18, and children under 12 go in free. Some stretches have little shade, so bring hats and water, and go early on hot days. The last entry is 18:00 from April to October and 15:00 from November to March.
The cable ferry
Beside the Butrint entrance, a chain-hauled raft crosses the Vivari channel in a short hop. Cars use it too, so hold hands near the ramp. Fares vary, so ask at the slip.
A Blue Eye outing
The spring at Muzine makes a good viewing trip. It is about an hour from Ksamil by road. The gate charges 50 ALL per adult, and a paved path of about 2 km leads from the car park. An electric mini-train costs about 300 ALL. Swimming is not allowed, and the water is about 10 C. Muddy ground after rain needs shoes with grip.
Tips for the day
- Do beach time before about 11:00 and again after 16:30.
- Carry cash. Sunbeds and buses do not take cards.
- Pack sun cream, water and a snack, since the islets have no shops or shade.
- Check that hire shops and boats are running if you travel in autumn or winter.
