Rhodes Town, Symi and Prasonisi From Lindos
Lindos is a place people travel to, not a hub they travel from. It lies about 50 km south of Rhodes Town at the end of the east coast road, and the village, its beaches and its Acropolis keep most visitors busy for a full day or two. Excursions do exist, but each one involves a long journey, so choose one or two rather than trying to do them all. Costs are in euros.
The short list
- Rhodes Old Town: by bus, about 1 to 1 hour 45 minutes each way.
- Symi: boat from Rhodes Town, about 50 minutes to 1.5 hours.
- Prasonisi: by car, over an hour each way.
- Kallithea Springs: a long day, close to Rhodes Town.
Rhodes Old Town
The Old Town of Rhodes is a UNESCO-listed medieval city, and it is the easiest outing because the bus does the work. KTEL charges €5.50 each way, with several departures a day in summer and fewer in winter, and the timetable is on ktelrodou.gr . Highlights are the Street of the Knights and the Palace of the Grand Master. The Archaeological Museum of Rhodes also stands in town. These sites have separate ticket prices, so budget for them.
Symi
No boat to Symi leaves Lindos. Day boats sail from Rhodes Town, from Mandraki or the main port, and you reach the harbour by bus or by hotel pickup. Day trips commonly stop at the Panormitis Monastery. Fast-boat tours that collect guests from Lindos hotels are priced from around €38 to €65 through resellers. See Symi day trips for current listings.
Prasonisi
The southern tip of the island is a sandbar between two seas, with a windsurf and kitesurf area. Drive there: allow more than an hour in each direction. The wind controls how the beach feels, so look at conditions before you commit.
Kallithea Springs
This restored Art Deco bathhouse sits by the sea near Rhodes Town, so from Lindos it is a full day. You swim from rock platforms and there is no sandy beach. Entry is about €5 for adults and about €3 for ages 12 to 18.
Closer to home
If a long trip does not appeal, walk to St Paul’s Bay in about 15 minutes, passing the ancient theatre. Water shoes help on the rocky entry. The village also has the Panagia church, with its 1489 bell tower, and the Acropolis, where a ticket is about €20 and timed entry applies. Check hhticket.gr before you go.
What is far away
The Valley of the Butterflies, Kamiros and Monolithos all lie on the west and northwest side of Rhodes, across the central mountains. Treat each as a separate outing from the west coast or Rhodes Town rather than an add-on from Lindos. Faliraki WaterPark is about 35 km north on the east coast.
Heat and fire
Afternoons regularly pass 35 C in July and August. Wildfire risk is high from April to October, so follow local guidance and the 112 alerts, as the UK government advice says.
