Ghardaïa Old Quarter and Palm Grove Walks
Ghardaïa’s old towns were built for walking, with stepped lanes, shaded arches and short distances between sights. The four routes here are the ones most visitors take. Go in the morning or late afternoon, wear sturdy shoes and carry water.
Beni Isguen with a guide
A guide is required. Meet at the guides’ office by the East Gate, remembering that hours differ across the year and are tighter in summer. The walk passes stepped lanes and covered arches, then climbs to the hilltop minaret. A path leads on to Bordj Boulila, the watchtower. The route finishes at the market square, where an auction takes place late in the day on certain days. Your guide can say when. Smoking is banned inside, residents must not be photographed and clothing should be modest. Non-Muslims are reported to be barred from certain sections.
Ghardaïa market and old quarter
Below the old town is an arcaded square where traders sell carpets, copper, spices and dates. In the old quarter above, a guide is recommended, and one guidebook advises against wandering alone. Hold on to bags and pay in cash.
Melika ridge
A short but steep climb leads to a ridge ksar next to a large cemetery of whitewashed graves. Visit at dawn or in the late afternoon for the best light. Respect the mourners, and plan transport back by taxi after dark.
El Atteuf lanes and the palm path
The oldest ksar, from about 1012, has lanes that lead out into the palm groves. A guide is usually needed in the old centre. Along the grove path, your guide can show how irrigation channels share water between gardens. Look at the Sidi Brahim mosque from outside only, unless your guide invites you in.
What to wear and carry
- Long sleeves, long trousers or skirts and a scarf. Women should have a headscarf for religious areas.
- A hat, sun cream and plenty of water. Summer heat often passes 40 to 45 degrees C.
- Photo ID for checkpoints.
- No drones, binoculars or telescopes unless you hold official permission.
The comfortable season runs from October to April. Winter nights can approach freezing. The valley has seen communal tensions in the past, so listen to your guide about where to go. For options, browse guided walks in Ghardaïa and read the FCDO safety page . Routard has a page on Beni Isguen .
