Crete Day Trips: Journey Times and Costs

Before choosing a day trip in Crete, look at the clock rather than the map. The island is 260 km from end to end, and roads into the mountains are slow. The table gives each trip’s home base, travel time and what you pay at the gate. Costs are in euros and mostly come from the official Hellenic Heritage pages for state sites. Boat and bus fares are approximate, so check them before you book.

Notes on the western trips

Start Samaria early. The trailhead is at Xyloskalo and the gorge is open roughly May to October. The walk is long and hard, and Agia Roumeli at the end has no road, so you leave by boat in the late afternoon. This trip is not possible from Agios Nikolaos or Sitia. The park may close in bad weather, so see the official ticket site before you set off.

Elafonisi is a protected shore. Take nothing from the beach, and keep to the paths. The shallow inner lagoon is calm, but the open water beyond it can pull swimmers out. Balos has a boat route from Kissamos and a rough track from Kaliviani of 8 to 9 km. Rental firms often exclude dirt-road damage, so read the contract first.

Notes on the central and eastern trips

Heraklion has the best-organised combination: a morning at Knossos, a bus back to the city, and an air-conditioned afternoon among the Minoan treasures in the Archaeological Museum. Wednesday has different museum hours from the rest of the week.

Spinalonga was a leprosy colony until 1957, so visit with some reserve. The boat from Plaka takes only 7 to 10 minutes. The Lasithi Plateau sits at about 850 m and mixes windmills with Dikteon Cave. The cave is closed on Tuesdays, and it reopened on 29 May 2026 after two years shut, so check first. The stairway down is steep and slippery.

Preveli needs strong knees. Allow time on the 300 to 450 steps, and bring cash for the monastery and parking.

Trips to leave for another time

Santorini is advertised as a day trip from Heraklion, but with a fast ferry of up to two hours each way you get only a few hours on the island. Chrissi island may restrict landing, so check the rules. Both work better as overnight or separate plans.
