Lahic Itineraries: Overnight Stays and Treks
Government advice, October 2026: the UK FCDO warns against any travel within 5 km of the Armenian border and against all but essential travel to the south-western districts of Kelbajar, Lachin, Qubadli, Zengilan, Jabrayil, Fuzuli, Khojavand, Shusha, Khojali, Khankendi, Aghdam and Tartar. The US rates Azerbaijan Level 3, reconsider travel. Lahij (Lahic) is outside those areas, and no itinerary here goes toward the Armenian border, Karabakh or the Iranian border. Check gov.uk and travel.state.gov .
Lahic suits one or two nights, and mountain walkers can stretch that to a trek. Below are the plans that make sense from here, from gentlest to hardest.
Plan 1: a two-day homestay
- Day 1. Drive from Baku through Shamakhi and Ismayilli (about 180 km, 3 to 4 hours). Settle into a family guesthouse and spend the afternoon with the copper workshops and the small museum.
- Night. Candidates include Rustam Rustamov’s guesthouse, Abbasov’s Guest House, Evim (Evim Otel or Evim Eco Hotel), Lahic Guesthouse and Ancient Lahij Guest House. Evening meals and breakfast are usually included, and a nightly rate is not confirmed.
- Day 2. Choose the Niyal hike (about 4.5 hours, 900 m of ascent) or the Zarnava footbridge and Zarnava to Mushkamir walk (7 km, about 3 hours). Then return to Baku, or continue to Sheki.
Plan 2: Babadag
Mount Babadag rises to 3,629 m and is approached from Lahic, about 8 km along the route. Trucks carry climbers to the end of the track, and the final ascent is on foot. Snow remains 9 to 10 months of the year, so go from mid-July. At the Hazrat Baba sanctuary pilgrims gather, so be respectful. Babadag lies on the border of Ismayilli and Quba districts. Book a guide, and use Niyal as a warm-up day. Ask operators for current rates, as no price is confirmed.
Plan 3: Lahic, Babadag and Khinalug
Some operators run a trek linking the three. Whether permits are needed for the border-zone area near Khinalug is not confirmed, so ask the operator to spell out what is required.
Plan 4: a Silk Road loop
Chain together Shamakhi (Diri Baba Mausoleum, Juma Mosque), Lahic, Basgal, Ivanovka, the Chabiant winery in Hajihatamli and finally Gabala. The drive to Gabala through Ismayilli is long, so spread the loop over several nights.
Plan 5: on foot to Basgal
An 18 km trail via Taglabiyan links Lahic and Basgal. The source is a secondary listing, so check the route locally before setting off.
Practical tips
- Pack cash in AZN. A village ATM has been reported but should not be relied on.
- Check the Ismayilli road before every journey. It is among Azerbaijan’s most slide-prone, and ice or snow may close it in winter.
- Shepherd dogs guard summer camps on the hills.
- Stay out of the river bed and do not camp in it, because the gorge floods without warning.
- Most travellers need an e-visa from evisa.gov.az. Read the current terms there.
