Visiting Kuusalu With Children
Kuusalu parish is a place for outdoor family time rather than rides and play centres. It lies in Harju County on the Gulf of Finland, roughly 40 to 55 km east of Tallinn, and the sights are spread out. Plan short stops, pack snacks and expect plenty of walking. This page groups ideas by what children can manage.
Toddlers and short legs: Tsitre
The tree trail at Tsitre, on Kolga Bay, is only 0.5 km. It crosses a former seaside summer estate park and includes a beach and an observation tower over the bay. It is the easiest stop of the parish and pairs with a picnic. Take your own food and water to this spot.
School-age children: Viru bog
The Viru bog trail has a 3 km boardwalk and a tower about 1.3 km from the car park. A walk to the tower and back is about 2.6 km, which many school-age children handle with breaks. The full loop is about 5.5 km. It is free. Safety points from RMK:
- Everyone stays on the boardwalk.
- No cycling on the boardwalk.
- The top floor of the tower holds 25 people. It is closed to climbing in thunderstorms.
- The bog is highly flammable, so no fires.
For families with a pushchair or wheelchair, the path to the tower works only with an assistant, and only the first platform of the tower is wheelchair-accessible. See the RMK page .
Curious older children: Hara and Majakivi
Hara is a derelict Soviet-era submarine base on the coast, now a heritage site. Tickets are EUR 10 for adults, EUR 7 for students and seniors and EUR 22 for a family, and preschool children enter free. Operator rules matter here. Children under 13 must be with an adult. Falling rocks are a real hazard, climbing on the pier rocks or in abandoned buildings is forbidden, and nobody may swim or jump into the water. Dogs stay on a leash and bikes stay off the pier. Outside the summer season the base opens by reservation, so email info@harasadam.ee before you drive out. The Hara base site lists the details.
Majakivi stands in Hara village. It is about 7 m high and has a ladder to the top. An adult should stay close to anyone climbing.
A quiet museum stop: Viinistu
Viinistu Art Museum has EUR 3 concession tickets and EUR 6 adult tickets. Days and hours change by season, so look at viinistu.ee first. The village harbour is nearby for a walk afterwards.
Practical notes
- Dress in layers and bring rain gear in every season.
- Only portable toilets were available at the Viru car park while renovation was under way, so plan breaks before you leave Tallinn.
- Buses on the E20 stop at Loksa tee, which is about 1.3 km from the bog trailhead. Check peatus.ee . A car is easier with children.
- Browse family-friendly Lahemaa excursions on GetYourGuide .
