Romantic Lahic: A Balcony Stay in the Caucasus
Government advice, October 2026: the UK FCDO warns against any travel within 5 km of the Armenian border and against all but essential travel to the south-western districts affected by the 2020 and 2023 conflicts, where mines and unexploded ordnance remain. The US rates Azerbaijan Level 3, reconsider travel. Lahij (Lahic) is in Ismayilli district, outside those areas. Check gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you plan.
Lahic is romantic in the way a quiet mountain village can be. Do not come for a spa weekend, wine tasting or an evening out, because the village has no spas, vineyards, bars, nightlife or fine dining. Come for a stone guesthouse, a long dinner cooked by your hosts and a landscape that goes silent when the day visitors drive off.
Where to stay
Several family guesthouses take overnight guests. Rustam Rustamov’s guesthouse is known for its balcony, home cooking and English-speaking hosts. Abbasov’s Guest House is rated highly by an independent travel writer, and Evim (listed as Evim Otel or Evim Eco Hotel), Lahic Guesthouse and Ancient Lahij Guest House are other options. The houses are built of river stone and timber. Evening meals and breakfast are normally included, and a nightly rate is not confirmed, so ask before you book.
Dinner and tea
Expect home cooking such as dolma and plov, served by your hosts. After dinner, a samovar of tea on the balcony is the classic way to end the day. The village sits at roughly 1,200 to 1,500 m, so bring a sweater even in warm months.
A guided late-afternoon walk
A walk toward the Niyal ridge is the scenic option, but only with a local guide and only in daylight. The full route is about 4.5 hours return and 900 m of ascent, which is too long for a casual evening, so aim for a shorter outing that ends before dusk. Shepherd dogs guard the summer camp. Keep out of the river bed, where the stream can rise fast.
A keepsake from the workshops
Pick a small copper piece together from a workshop on the main street. One visitor reported having a plate inscribed with the village name and a date. Ask before taking photographs. Engraved plates weigh a lot, and cookware must be tinned (qalay) before use with food.
Useful details
- Distance: about 180 km from Baku, a 3 to 4 hour drive. The last 20 to 22 km from Ismayilli is a narrow, steep gorge road.
- Season: spring to autumn. Winter brings snow and ice.
- On foot: cobbles are steep and slippery when wet. Wear flat shoes with grip, and leave wheeled bags at the car park by the river, a walk of under 10 minutes.
- Payment: cash in AZN. A village bank machine is reported but may be empty.
