Garni Day Trip Planner from Yerevan
As of October 2026 the FCDO names a 5 km zone along Armenia’s eastern border and the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan. Garni, in Kotayk, is outside both. Current guidance is posted on gov.uk and travel.state.gov.
Route Overview
Leave Yerevan on the regional road H3 and you reach the Garni gorge after about 23 km and the temple after 27 to 30 km. Count on 40 to 50 minutes behind the wheel. Geghard waits another 9 to 10 km east, a drive of 15 to 20 minutes. Garni, Geghard, the Azat gorge, the Khosrov reserve and the Charents Arch all sit in Kotayk, so one day can stay inside a single province.
Option 1: The Classic Loop
Most operators string the stops together like this: Charents Arch, Garni Temple, Symphony of the Stones, Geghard, then a lavash stop. Running the loop backwards, with Geghard first, tends to dodge the coach crowds. The Charents Arch is in Voghjaberd village, roughly 14 km before the temple, and it frames Mount Ararat. Garni charges 1,500 AMD per adult for the museum-reserve, while Geghard asks nothing at the gate.
Option 2: A Hiker’s Day
Walkers can spend the day on Havuts Tar, the ruined 11th-century monastery on the ridge across the gorge. The unmarked trail starts from the gorge floor, passes the medieval bridge and the fish hatchery, and runs by the Khosrov guardhouse, where you sign in. Reckon on a half day, with 5 to 7 km each way, sturdy shoes and a GPS track or guide. Autumn through spring is best, from September to May.
A ranger-led Khosrov route is a different outing altogether and needs its own full day. Sign in at the guardhouse, pay the reserve fee and walk with a ranger or guide. Tour operators bundle the permit.
Option 3: Public Transport
Buses 266 and 284 depart Yerevan’s Gai bus station, on the Nor Nork side. The 284 runs on to Goght, close to Geghard. Departures are few, with a handful in the morning, so work out your return before you set off. A taxi bridges the gap between Garni and Geghard and back to the city.
Beyond Garni
Areni, Khor Virap, Hovhannavank and Lake Arpi lie in other provinces. Give each a day of its own.
