Rio Celeste and Cano Negro Day Trip Planner
Three outings start from La Fortuna, and a fourth route is a transfer rather than a day trip. Compare travel time, cost and the type of day each one gives you before you commit.

Rio Celeste
This river in Tenorio Volcano National Park is known for its blue colour. Adults pay about $12 and children aged 2 to 12 about $5, plus IVA, and visitors reserve online through the national park system. Parking is about CRC 2,000. Swimming is not allowed inside the park, and a free public spot sits about 1 km beyond the entrance, beside the bridge. Trail closures happen, so ask your operator about the current state of the waterfall path.
Cano Negro
The Cano Negro trip runs 8 to 9 hours in total and works best as an organised tour. After the road to Los Chiles, you spend about 2 hours on the Rio Frio. Operators charge about $65 to $100, and entry is usually included. Boats are for watching only. Caiman and birdlife are possible, never certain, and nobody should feed or handle animals.
Around Lake Arenal
Route 142 is paved, and the potholes slow you down, so allow extra time. Driving from La Fortuna to Nuevo Arenal takes about 1.5 hours. The lake is a reservoir lying west of town. Start in daylight and avoid leaving bags in the car during stops.
The Monteverde link
Travellers going on to Monteverde can use a taxi, boat and taxi combination. The boat part crosses Lake Arenal in about 45 minutes, from La Represa to Rio Chiquito, and the whole journey takes about 3 hours. A shared seat costs about $25 to $35 one way, while a private transfer costs far more. By road the trip takes 3.5 to 4 hours using routes 142, 145 and 606, mostly paved with a few rough sections.
Choosing between them
- Pick Rio Celeste for a long forest walk and a colourful river.
- Pick Cano Negro for wildlife watching from a boat.
- Pick the lake road if you have a car and a free afternoon.
- Treat Monteverde as a move to a new base, not a return trip.
Practical tips
- Leave early, since most tours depart in the morning.
- Take rain gear, repellent and water.
- Confirm prices and trail status with the operator before you go.
