Romantic Getaways in Entebbe: Lodges and Sunsets
Travel advisory (October 2026): Washington lists Uganda at Level 4, “Do Not Travel”, up from Level 3 since May 2026. The reasons given are the regional Ebola outbreak, crime, terrorism, unrest and the country’s anti-LGBTQI+ law. London’s FCDO stops short of advising against travel to Uganda as a whole, yet it says terrorists are very likely to attempt attacks and notes that same-sex activity is a crime under the 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act. Look up both sets of advice before booking, confirm the current US level at travel.state.gov, and take out insurance that covers every leg of your trip.
A romantic break in Entebbe is quiet by design. The setting is the lake, a few good lodges and warm evenings, so keep expectations modest. Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Uganda, so same-sex couples should weigh that carefully when planning.
Stay overnight on Ngamba Island
The Ngamba Ecolodge puts guests in luxury tented cottages on the chimpanzee island, 23 km south-east of Entebbe. According to the Chimpanzee Trust’s official page, evenings can include sunset cruises and bonfires. The boat from Entebbe leaves at 09:00 or 12:45 and takes about 45 minutes by speedboat. Everything must be reserved in advance on the Chimpanzee Trust website , where the prices are quoted.
Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa
Located at Kigo, between Kampala and Entebbe along the Entebbe road, this resort has an 18-hole course and the Serena Maisha spa. A couple might pair a spa afternoon with a round of golf. Ask the resort directly for current rates.
Dinner by the water
Beachside restaurants such as 2Friends and Goretti’s are the classic choice for a dinner with a lake view. Confirm that your restaurant is open before you head out, and book a ride back for later in the evening.
A sunset boat outing
Ask your hotel to find a licensed boatman for a trip at dusk. Each of you should wear a lifejacket for the whole outing.
Garden walk
The Entebbe Botanical Gardens, laid out in 1898, offer shade, old trees and monkeys overhead. The animals are wild, so keep snacks away from them. Opening times and fees differ between sources, so confirm them before you visit.
Keep out of the lake
Neither of you should swim, wade or paddle at any Entebbe beach. The lake is home to bilharzia, hippos and crocodiles. If you want a swim, choose a hotel with a pool.
Practical notes
- Book early for weekends and holidays.
- Entebbe pairs well with a longer trip, as a calm first or last night near the airport.
- If you plan a safari afterwards, see the multi-day page for routes and cautions.
