Crete With Kids: Indoor, Beach and Walk Days
Families in Crete do best by choosing a day type first and a place second. A very hot day calls for an indoor stop, a calm day suits a shallow beach, and a cool morning suits an easy walk. Distances are large, so keep each day within one region. Prices are in euros. Wildfires are a summer risk from April to October, so look up fire alerts and closures for your area before heading out.
When it is too hot
Cretaquarium at Gournes, 14 km east of Heraklion, is the best air-conditioned option. Marine scientists run it, and the tanks hold sharks, rays, turtles and seahorses among roughly 2,000 sea animals. Tickets are EUR 15 for adults between 1 April and 31 October, EUR 8 for ages 5 to 17, and free for younger children. Doors open at 09:30 every day of the year and close at 19:00 in summer or 16:00 in winter. Ramps make it easy for pushchairs.
The Natural History Museum of Crete in Heraklion has an earthquake simulator that older children enjoy. Tickets cost about EUR 8 to 12. It opens 09:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and 10:00 to 18:00 at weekends, with shorter weekday hours from November to April.
When you want water
Elafonisi has a warm lagoon that is knee-deep or less close to the shore. Keep small children inside it, because the sea beyond has strong currents. On the west coast, wind can create rip currents at beaches like Falassarna, so stay close to shore and watch the flags. Elafonisi is a protected area, so nothing may be taken from the beach, and it is a long drive of about 76 km from Chania.
Watercity near Hersonissos advertises 44 slides, and children under 90 cm get in free. It is closed for the 2026 season and opens again next summer. Limnoupolis at Varipetro, about 7 km from Chania, keeps its schedule on its own website . Aquaworld in Hersonissos is not a water park. It is a small aquarium and reptile rescue centre where children can touch rescued animals with staff nearby. Adults and children over 11 pay EUR 10, younger children EUR 5, and the venue is shut until April 2027. Its own site, aquaworld-crete.com , carries the reopening news.
When you want an easy walk
Imbros Gorge in Sfakia is the family gorge. The path is about 8 km, mostly downhill, and takes two to two and a half hours. A few euros pays the entry. At the end, at Komitades, a taxi can bring your group back to the start for roughly EUR 10 to 30 in all.
Samaria Gorge is a 16 km mountain hike and is not suitable for children under 10. Dikteon Cave is also a challenge for young legs, with a steep 20-minute climb from the car park and over 200 damp steps inside. Prams and pushchairs cannot go in. The cave charges EUR 15 or EUR 8 and shuts on Tuesdays. It reopened on 29 May 2026, so check it is open before the drive.
