Planning Two to Three Days in Leipzig
Planning two to three days in Leipzig
There are no long guided tours based in Leipzig worth listing. What exists is a good short city break, plus train links to neighbouring towns. The plans below fit two to four days.
Option 1: Leipzig only, two to three days
Leipzig is a two to three day city. Keep itineraries short rather than stretching them.
- Day one: the Thomaskirche, the Bach-Museum on Thomaskirchhof and the Mädlerpassage. Dinner at Auerbachs Keller, which turns 500 in 2026.
- Day two: the Völkerschlachtdenkmal in Probstheida, then the Panorama Tower on Augustusplatz.
- Day three: the Spinnerei galleries in Plagwitz and a walk along the Karl-Heine-Kanal.
A three-day Leipzig Card costs EUR 24.90, covers local public transport in Zone 110 and discounts some attractions. It does not make them free. Source: the leipzig.travel 2026 flyer .
Option 2: add Dresden
Dresden takes about 1 hour 05 minutes on the ICE, or about 1 hour 40 minutes on a regional train. Sleep there for a night, then come back to the Hauptbahnhof the next day.
Option 3: a loop of regional trains
Link Leipzig, Halle (Saale), Naumburg and Lutherstadt Wittenberg. The S-Bahn runs to Halle in 20 to 30 minutes. Timings for the other two depend on the connection, so use DB Navigator to build the loop and decide where to sleep.
Option 4: lakes in summer
The Neuseenland lakes make a summer weekend for cyclists and swimmers. Be careful with the water:
- The Cospudener See north beach has no lifeguards, and no rescue station will exist there before 2030.
- In season, DLRG lifeguards are reported at three other lakes: Markkleeberger, Kulkwitzer and Schladitzer.
- Swim only in summer, at your own risk, and check the city page for algae alerts.
Choosing between the options
- Short on time: stay with Option 1 and keep every day inside the city.
- Interested in a second city: add Dresden, since it is the quickest to reach.
- Happy to improvise by train: build the regional loop in DB Navigator.
- Travelling in summer with a bike or swimwear: look at the lakes, and respect the safety notes above.
Booking a base
Hotels near the Hauptbahnhof suit loops by train, and rooms near the Markt suit a stay on foot. Compare Leipzig accommodation on Booking.com before choosing.
Getting around when you arrive
- City Tunnel: it links the Hauptbahnhof with the Markt, Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz and Bayerischer Bahnhof.
- Tickets: validate paper tickets when you board, unless you bought a digital one.
- Airport: the S5 and S5X reach LEJ in about 12 to 15 minutes.
