Kingston Itinerary Ideas for Three to Five Days
Travel advice as of October 2026: Violent crime is high across Jamaica and is concentrated in inner-city areas. The UK FCDO and the US State Department each name places to avoid, parts of Kingston among them. Book licensed or hotel-arranged transport, stay off the streets after dark, and read gov.uk and travel.state.gov before departure.
This plan starts with the cool Blue Mountains, moves through Uptown Kingston and finishes at the coast, then offers two extra days for Downtown and Portland. Base yourself in New Kingston, where most hotels are, and keep each evening free for dinner and a driver home. Costs are in US dollars unless marked J$. The best weather is from December to April, May and October are the wettest months, and hurricane season lasts from 1 June until 30 November.
Day 1: mountains and coffee
Leave early for Holywell in the Blue and John Crow Mountains, about an hour by road via Newcastle. The Oatley Mountain trail (1.2 km) and the Waterfall trail (1.3 km) each take roughly an hour, and entry is US$10 for adults. Telephone the Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust at 876-619-9807 the day before to confirm what is open. Come down to Irish Town for the coffee estate at Craighton, where the 1805 great house, farm walk and cupping cost about US$25 for adults and about US$15 for ages 6 to 12. Dine in Kingston.
Day 2: Hope Road
Book the 75-minute house tour at the Bob Marley Museum for the morning, since tours go hourly and adults pay US$25. Walk to Devon House for lunch at the bakery or one of its restaurants, such as Pimentos, Lemongrass or La Pizzeria. Take the mansion tour, which finishes at 16:00 on weekdays. Then enjoy ice cream on the lawn. On Sunday, when the museum is closed, swap the day around and end at the Kingston Dub Club in Jack’s Hill, which opens from 17:00 to midnight. Arrange the return drive before you go up.
Day 3: Port Royal and the cay
The 25 km road along the Palisadoes ends at Port Royal. Spend the morning at Fort Charles and the Giddy House, which together take about two hours. The old seaport’s sunken half is protected and is seen from the shore only. Gloria’s Rendezvous, on Queen Street, serves seafood, so telephone ahead to make sure it is open. From the jetty, boats cross to Lime Cay in about 15 minutes. Bring food and water, because nothing is sold there.
Day 4: Downtown
Visit Downtown Kingston in daylight and leave by late afternoon. The National Gallery at 12 Ocean Boulevard charges J$400 for adults, and is open Tuesday to Sunday. The Kingston Creative murals on Water Lane are nearby. A resident guide takes visitors around the Trench Town Culture Yard by prior arrangement on +1 876-837-0359, and it is respectful to treat the visit as entering a community, not an attraction.
Day 5: Portland
Portland Parish is about 95 km north-east, roughly three hours each way, so leave at dawn. The Rio Grande bamboo rafts carry two people on a calm two to three hour float. Jerk at Boston Bay makes a good lunch. Check the entry terms at Frenchman’s Cove before you plan a beach stop there, and think about a night in Port Antonio instead of driving back.
