Beyond Entebbe: Multi-Day Trips to Ssese and Parks
Travel advisory (October 2026): Washington lists Uganda at Level 4, “Do Not Travel”, up from Level 3 since May 2026. The reasons given are the regional Ebola outbreak, crime, terrorism, unrest and the country’s anti-LGBTQI+ law. London’s FCDO stops short of advising against travel to Uganda as a whole, yet it says terrorists are very likely to attempt attacks and notes that same-sex activity is a crime under the 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act. Look up both sets of advice before booking, confirm the current US level at travel.state.gov, and take out insurance that covers every leg of your trip.
Entebbe airport is the doorway to Uganda’s longer journeys, so this page looks outward. On health: Uganda’s Ebola outbreak was declared over in late August 2026, but the outbreak in the DRC continues and travellers arriving at Entebbe are screened. Check current guidance before you fly.
Nearest option: the Ssese Islands
The Ssese archipelago has 84 islands and forms Kalangala District, with Bugala Island the largest. Ferries leave from Nakiwogo in Entebbe, usually in the afternoon. Because the boat does not always keep to a timetable, confirm the departure with the operator (NODL) before you plan connections. On the islands, swim only in lodge pools, since lake water carries bilharzia.
Jinja for the Nile
Jinja is the base for rafting and bungee jumping on the Nile, with Adrift among the operators. It is 2 to 4 hours each way from Entebbe depending on traffic, which is reason enough to stay a night or two.
Ngamba Island overnight
The Ngamba Ecolodge offers tented cottages on the chimpanzee island, 23 km from Entebbe. Boats go at 09:00 and 12:45, and the Chimpanzee Trust takes the reservations.
Gorillas in the south-west
Gorilla trekking happens in Bwindi and Mgahinga. A standard permit for foreign non-residents costs USD 800, or USD 600 in the low season. Trekkers must be at least 15 years old. Small planes link Entebbe with airstrips near the parks, and Aerolink Uganda and Bar Aviation are the names to look up for schedules.
Safari parks
Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Kibale and Lake Mburo are all multi-day trips. Make your plans around the following cautions.
- Queen Elizabeth National Park: in October 2023 terrorists killed two tourists and their driver in the park. Hire an established operator and avoid driving yourself once it gets dark.
- Border areas with the DRC: this covers Semuliki, the Rwenzori Mountains, Kasese and Bundibugyo. Follow the latest advice, because crossings such as Bwera can close at short notice.
- Bwindi and Mgahinga: security staff routinely go with trekking groups. Do not join any tour that crosses into the DRC.
Putting a trip together
Rains arrive from March to May and again in October and November. Leave a spare day before your flight home, and book accommodation near the airport for the last night. You will find park information on the Uganda Wildlife Authority site .
