Entebbe Day Trip Planner: Kampala to Mabamba
Travel advisory (October 2026): Washington lists Uganda at Level 4, “Do Not Travel”, up from Level 3 since May 2026. The reasons given are the regional Ebola outbreak, crime, terrorism, unrest and the country’s anti-LGBTQI+ law. London’s FCDO stops short of advising against travel to Uganda as a whole, yet it says terrorists are very likely to attempt attacks and notes that same-sex activity is a crime under the 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act. Look up both sets of advice before booking, confirm the current US level at travel.state.gov, and take out insurance that covers every leg of your trip.
A day away from Entebbe works best when you match the trip to the travel time. This planner sorts the options from shortest to longest. Ebola note: Uganda’s outbreak ended in late August 2026, the DRC outbreak is still going, and Entebbe airport screens arrivals, so check current health guidance.
Short hops
Ngamba Island (half day). Speedboats leave Entebbe at 09:00 and 12:45, taking about 45 minutes to reach the chimpanzee sanctuary 23 km offshore. Booking with the Chimpanzee Trust is required.
Nakiwogo to Buwaya ferry. The crossing is about 4 km and 15 minutes between Entebbe and Mpigi District. It reportedly carries foot passengers only since vehicle boarding stopped in 2024, with maintenance closures in 2025, so ask locally and never assume a timetable.
About an hour out
Mabamba Bay. A shoebill outing by canoe, with a licensed guide, reached in about an hour by road. A few operators start from Nakiwogo by boat instead. The cost is about USD 45 to 200 depending on group size and transport. Go early and expect a likely, not guaranteed, sighting.
Kampala in a day
The expressway takes about 35 to 45 minutes in normal traffic, while the old road can take 2 to 3.5 hours when it is jammed. Tolls are charged at plazas at Mpala, Kajjansi and Busega, and a light vehicle pays about UGX 5,000 a trip. Worth seeing in the capital are the Kasubi Tombs (reopened in 2026), the Uganda National Mosque and the Baha’i temple. The Uganda Museum on Kira Road is shut, with no reopening date announced.
West and south-west of Kampala
Mpanga Forest Reserve near Mpigi is run by the National Forestry Authority. Trails, fees and distance should be confirmed in advance.
The Equator at Kayabwe on the Masaka road makes a simple photo stop on a longer drive.
A long day
Jinja is the home of Nile rafting and bungee. Each way takes 2 to 4 hours depending on traffic, so it is a very long day, and a night there is worth considering.
Water rules for every outing
None of these trips involves swimming in Lake Victoria, and that should stay true. Bilharzia, hippos and crocodiles make every shoreline unsafe. Keep to the boat, the canoe or the dock.
