Lahic Sights: Reserve, Museum and Gorge Road
Government advice, October 2026: the UK FCDO warns against any travel within 5 km of the Armenian border and against all but essential travel to the south-western districts affected by the 2020 and 2023 conflicts, where mines and unexploded ordnance remain. The US rates Azerbaijan Level 3, reconsider travel. Lahij (Lahic) is in Ismayilli district, outside those areas. Check gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you go.
The Lahij State Historical-Cultural Reserve was created in 1980 and protects 103 monuments. The village is a working community, not an open-air museum, and the sights are best taken slowly. A river separates Lahij proper in the south from the smaller Aragit in the north, and the reserve describes 11 craft neighbourhoods. The people are Tats, an Iranian-speaking community also fluent in Azerbaijani. UNESCO lists the copper craft on its Intangible Cultural Heritage list (2015). The village itself is not a World Heritage Site.
Sights in order of arrival
Lil Bridge (1931). A pedestrian wooden-beam bridge at the entrance.
History museum. Housed in the former Agholu (Aghogly) Mosque of 1902, built from river stone, next to the tourist office. The museum opened in 1985. It costs about 2 to 3 AZN and is usually open 10:00 to 19:00, but confirm locally. One room holds a coppersmith’s bellows from the 18th century and archaeological finds including stone knives, arrowheads and clay pots. Interior signs are absent and a visit is brief.
Bazar Street. The main street, also called Böyük (Great) Street, where the coppersmiths work. Entering a workshop to watch is welcomed. Ask before taking photographs.
Mosques
Treat each mosque as a place of worship in current use. Observe from outside, dress modestly and avoid prayer times.
| Mosque | Date | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Badavun (Badoyun) | 1791 | Restored in 2019 |
| Zavaro | 1805 | Beside a village spring |
| Yukhari Aragit | 1814 | Used for worship again since independence |
| Ashagi Aragit | not dated | Also standing in Aragit |
| Agholu | 1902 | Now the museum |
Below ground and in ruins
River-stone drains run beneath the streets. The tourism board puts their age near 2,000 years and other sources say over 1,000, so read the figure as approximate. Elsewhere in the village stand the ruins of a 72-room caravanserai, thought to date from the 18th century, and a 19th-century bathhouse that residents continue to use.
The approach drive
The road follows the Girdimanchay gorge from Ismayilli. About 40 minutes and 20 to 22 km, it is a narrow, steep, potholed road with a history of landslides. Along the way, a rocky dirt track descends to the 74 m Zarnava suspension footbridge over the Girdiman stream. A small fee may apply there.
