Sightseeing at the Zambezi and Chobe Confluence
The best sights here come down to river geography, one modern bridge and the Victoria Falls area about 80 km away. Kazungula is a working border and freight junction, so treat the town as a place to pass through and the surroundings as the destination. Kasane, in Botswana, is a convenient base, 8 km west of the bridge.
What is the Kazungula Bridge?
It is a road and rail crossing of the Zambezi that opened on 10 May 2021. The structure is 923 m long and 18.5 m wide, with cables supporting the deck, two lanes of traffic, one rail track and walkways for pedestrians. The rail track does not yet connect to either country’s network. The deck bends in a curve so that it stays clear of Zimbabwean territory.
Should you stop and look? No. The bridge is a border crossing with heavy trucks, and in June 2021 visits and pedestrian sightseeing were banned after crowds arrived. Crossing it as a traveller is the way to see it. Officials direct you at the border post, which is announced as open around the clock from 24 February 2026. Drivers pay a per-vehicle toll, so check current rates.
How do four countries fit in one spot?
They come within a few hundred metres of each other, but never meet. The Zambezi and Chobe rivers join here, and two tripoints sit at either end of a Zambia and Botswana boundary only about 135 m long. Namibia, Botswana and Zambia meet at the western tripoint, and Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe at the eastern one. Namibia and Zimbabwe stay apart.
Where is the best wildlife viewing?
From the water. A boat from Kasane runs about three hours and shows elephants, hippos, crocodiles and birds along the Chobe. Chobe National Park is one of Africa’s largest elephant concentrations, and the park fee is about BWP 270 per adult per day from April 2026.
What about the Falls?
Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park and the Falls lie on the Zambian side, about 80 km from the bridge and an hour to an hour and a quarter by road. Spray is heavy during the wet season.
Culture stops nearby
- Mukuni Village is a working Leya community with a curio market, set about 7 km from the Falls.
- The Livingstone Museum, established in 1934, is the oldest and largest museum in Zambia. Confirm opening hours.
Staying safe while sightseeing
Avoid walking the riverfront or bush edges unless you have a licensed guide, and never swim in either river. Elephants on the road need space. Standard precautions apply, and entry rules deserve a second look before you travel. Carry a passport valid six months past arrival, with two free pages for Zambia and three for Botswana.
