Klaipeda for Families with Young Children
A family trip to Klaipėda comes down to a few good anchors: an aquarium, a naval ship, a dinosaur park and some forest and beach time. Here is how to fit them together, with 2026 prices in euros.
Rainy day first choice: the aquarium
The Lithuanian Sea Museum is on the Curonian Spit at Smiltynės g. 3, and the ferry from the Old Ferry Terminal (E. Galvanausko bul. 1) takes about 5 to 7 minutes. From the landing, the museum is 1.6 km away, and a paid mini train follows the ferry schedule for tired legs. Inside, the aquarium is the main event, with the seals and the Baltic exhibitions close behind. Young visitors can also hear about the Baltic Sea animal rehabilitation centre, which offers tours that must be booked by email in advance. Leave pets at your hotel, since they are not admitted to the halls.
Money matters:
- Adult ticket: EUR 10 from October to April, EUR 14 from May to September.
- School students and students: EUR 5 or EUR 7.
- Pre-school children: free.
- Everyone: free on the last Sunday of the month.
The museum also holds dolphin and sea lion presentations, and an adult ticket for those is EUR 12 in winter and EUR 18 in summer. In the colder months the museum opens only from Friday to Sunday, so see the museum hours before you set off.
The ship Sūduvis
Sūduvis is a minehunter that is now a museum ship, moored on the Danė by the Castle Bridge. Tickets are EUR 6 for adults and EUR 3 reduced. Expect narrow ladders and steep steps, which means it is a poor fit for small children and for pushchairs.
Dinosaurs at Radailiai
Dino Park, at Pušyno g. 9 in Radailiai, has animatronic dinosaurs in a wooded park. The Upside-Down House there costs a few euros more than the base ticket of about EUR 10. It operates from about 1 April to 31 October, so it is shut out of season. Opening times differ between listings, so call or check the park’s own page.
Forest sculptures
At Juodkrantė on the Curonian Spit, the Hill of Witches is a free woodland path with about 80 wooden sculptures of witches and devils. The Smiltynė to Nida bus (EUR 8.00 per person) stops in Juodkrantė.
Sand and sea
Smiltynė and Melnragė are the sandy Baltic beaches families use. Sea water averages about 13 degrees C in June and about 16 degrees C in July. Pick spots with lifeguards, pay attention to the flags, leave the water when a storm is coming, and keep children well back from the harbour breakwater and the strait.
City stroll
The Old Town has small bronze sculptures along its streets. Children can look for them on a free walk between the other stops.
Ferry fares
A foot passenger pays EUR 1.70 for the round trip, and a bicycle sails free with its owner’s ticket. The ferry price list has the full tariff.
