Hiking and Strolling Around Lahic
Government advice, October 2026: the UK FCDO warns against any travel within 5 km of the Armenian border and against all but essential travel to the south-western districts of Kelbajar, Lachin, Qubadli, Zengilan, Jabrayil, Fuzuli, Khojavand, Shusha, Khojali, Khankendi, Aghdam and Tartar. The US rates Azerbaijan Level 3, reconsider travel. Lahij (Lahic) and the trails below are outside those areas, and none of them heads toward the Armenian or Iranian border. Look at gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you set out.
Lahic rewards walkers at two scales. The village itself is a maze of steep cobbled lanes, and the surrounding hills carry several marked and unmarked trails. Because vehicles need permission to enter the village, nobody tours it any other way than on foot.
Choose your walk
| Walk | Length | Time | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Village lane circuit | Short | 2 to 3 hours | Steep cobbles |
| Niyal trail to the fortress ruins | 900 m of ascent | About 4.5 hours return | Strenuous, not hard for a trained hiker |
| Zarnava to Mushkamir | 7 km | About 3 hours | Moderate |
| Lahic to Basgal via Taglabiyan | 18 km | Full day | Long, from a secondary listing |
| Muju to Lahic | 10 km | About 5 hours | Hard, through Shahdag National Park |
The village lane circuit
Leave your car at the riverside lot and walk in under 10 minutes over Lil Bridge (1931), a pedestrian-only wooden bridge. Climb Bazar Street, also called Böyük (Great) Street, where coppersmiths work in open shops. Continue to the Badavun (1791) and Zavaro (1805) mosques, where a spring runs. Then pass the former Agholu Mosque (1902), now the small history museum, and cross the river to Aragit and its Yukhari Aragit mosque (1814). The mosques are in use, so keep to the outside, dress modestly and avoid prayer times. Go at an unhurried pace and allow 2 to 3 hours. Shoes with a firm sole are essential, because wet cobbles are slippery.
The Niyal trail
The route begins at the southern edge of the village by the stream crossing and climbs toward the ruins of a fortress, which sits hours away on foot. In 2018 it became the first waymarked trail in Azerbaijan, and markers cover only the way to the ruins. Beyond them, the climb to the 2,063 to 2,112 m summit is unmarked. Walk it from summer to early autumn with a local guide or a GPS track, and keep away from shepherd dogs at the summer camp.
Zarnava to Mushkamir
The trail starts at the 74 m suspension footbridge over the Girdiman stream, on the Ismayilli to Lahic road. To reach it, leave the sealed road and descend a rocky dirt road to Zarnava village. A small fee may apply at the bridge.
Longer routes
The Basgal walk is about 18 km. The Muju walk crosses protected mountain terrain. Book a local guide for both, and confirm the route locally.
Staying safe
- Do not wade or camp in the river bed. The gorge floods quickly after rain.
- A guesthouse can find a guide for a village walk. Rustam Rustamov’s guesthouse speaks English. Fix the price beforehand, since no standard rate is published.
- Bring cash in AZN.
