Plan a Multi Day Stay in Black River
Advisory as of 31 October 2026. The US rates Mauritius Level 2 for crime. UK guidance warns of petty crime and bag theft, including at Flic-en-Flac, and says to stay away from protests after unrest that began on 9 October. Evening curfews lifted on 19 October. Read current official advice before booking.
Planning a multi day stay in Black River
Black River District has enough in it to fill a week, and the sights are close enough that you can unpack once. The first decision is where to sleep, and the second is whether you want a beach-led or a hill-led trip. Money is in Mauritian rupees (Rs) throughout.
Choose a base
| Base | Character | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Flic-en-Flac | long public beach, apartments and mid-range hotels | families, self-catering |
| Tamarin and Black River | boutique lodges and villas near the marina | dolphin boats, fishing, surfing season |
| Le Morne peninsula | resort enclave at the southern end | long beach stays with day trips |
Reservoirs were low in October 2026, and one outlet says hotels may have limited water supply until December. Ask your accommodation about it before you pay a deposit.
Beach-led four days
- Day 1: Settle in, walk the lagoon shore and wear reef shoes in the shallows.
- Day 2: Take an early licensed dolphin boat from Tamarin, then spend the afternoon at the beach.
- Day 3: Book a catamaran or pirogue to Crystal Rock and Ile aux Benitiers. A half-day transfer costs roughly Rs 1,200 to 1,800 and a full-day barbecue cruise Rs 2,500 to 3,500.
- Day 4: Make one trip up to Chamarel, where the geopark ticket (Rs 800 adult, Rs 400 child) covers the dunes, waterfall viewpoints and tortoise park.
Hill-led four days
- Day 1: Chamarel geopark and the Ebony Forest jeep tour (Rs 1,600 for adults).
- Day 2: The Plaine Champagne road, with free viewpoints at the gorges and Alexandra Falls, then Grand Bassin.
- Day 3: Piton de la Petite Riviere Noire, the island’s highest point at 828 m, for 2.5 to 3.5 hours of walking. Rest in the afternoon.
- Day 4: The Macchabee trail downhill through Black River Gorges National Park, about 3 to 4 hours, with a taxi waiting at the lower end.
Adding a fifth and sixth day
A fifth day could be Casela Nature Parks, open daily from 09:00 to 17:00. A sixth could follow the B9 coast road to Macondé Viewpoint and the sea cliffs at Gris Gris. The Aapravasi Ghat in Port Louis, a UNESCO site, is a free and quiet half-day option.
Getting around
Rent a car if you are confident on narrow hill roads, driving on the left and watching for stray dogs, or hire a driver and agree the fare first. Public buses run along the coast but do not climb to Chamarel or the trailheads. A driver also means nobody has to drive after a tasting at the rum distillery.
Season check
November to May is cyclone season, with the peak from January to March, and you may not leave your accommodation during a cyclone. Winter from May to October is drier and cooler and better for hiking. Summer is hot and humid, and it suits blue marlin fishing from November to April.
