Chamarel, Casela and rum: visiting the paid attractions
Most of the ticketed attractions near Black River fall into two groups. Chamarel in the highlands has the dunes, the waterfall, a forest reserve and a distillery, and Casela is a large animal and adventure park near the coast. This page gives the facts that matter for planning. Prices are in rupees (Rs), for non-residents.
Chamarel 7 Coloured Earth Geopark
- Tickets: adults Rs 800, children aged 5 to 11 Rs 400, under-5s free.
- Hours: 08:30 to 17:30 from October to May, with the last ticket at 17:00. From June to September it closes at 17:00.
- Included: the dunes, two viewpoints over the Chamarel Waterfall and the giant tortoise park.
- Payment: rupee cash, cards (Diners excluded) or local mobile pay. Foreign cash is refused.
- Rules: stay on the boardwalks. Hiking to the waterfall alone is prohibited, and so is swimming at its base.
Ebony Forest
The jeep tour called Take A Drive takes two hours and costs Rs 1,600 for adults and Rs 1,080 for ages 5 to 17. Online booking earns a 10 percent discount. The Guided Trek lasts 3 to 4 hours from 09:00, needs at least two adults and costs Rs 2,500 for adults and Rs 1,650 for ages 5 to 17. The jeep tour includes a 0.5 km walk on the Flycatcher Forest and Sublime Point raised walkways.
Rum, illusions and lunch
La Rhumerie de Chamarel makes rum from fresh sugarcane juice and runs a guided distillery visit with a tasting. The official site does not post fixed prices or hours, so ask before travelling. Its restaurant L’Alchimiste serves Creole and European food, and reservations are sensible. Curious Corner of Chamarel, opposite the geopark entrance, is an indoor walk-through of illusions and a mirror maze that suits wet days.
Casela Nature Parks
Casela covers 350 hectares at Cascavelle. It is open from 09:00 to 17:00 every day except 25 December and 1 January. The African Safari, aviary, Tulawaka toboggan (760 m), zip lines and quad biking are the main activities. Adult non-resident tickets cost from about Rs 1,300 to 1,600, and booking.caselaparks.com gives current prices. Casela also advertises lion walks and other big-cat encounters. Animal welfare groups advise against them, so choose the safari and aviary.
Underwater waterfall flights
The famous underwater waterfall off the Le Morne peninsula is created by sand sliding down the ocean shelf. You see it from the air or not at all. Resellers sell shared 15 minute helicopter flights from about 190 to 220 EUR or USD per person. Ask who flies the aircraft, because reseller listings do not always name the operator.
Quick tips
- Keep Curious Corner or the jeep tour in mind as a fallback when rain moves across the plateau.
- Use a driver if you plan to taste rum, since the B104 hairpins are steep.
- Carry rupees for entry gates and small purchases.
