Romantic Getaways in Koblenz: Rhine Evenings
Two nights, one plan
This is a simple shape for a couple’s weekend in Koblenz: a slow arrival evening by the river, a castle and garden day, and a gentle last morning. It works best from spring to autumn, when the castle and cable car are open.
Friday evening: the river
Arrive and walk the Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer promenade toward the Deutsches Eck, where the two rivers join. The headland is free, and the long tree-lined path beside the water gives you views of passing ships and the fortress on the opposite bank. Keep back from the water, as the Rhine carries heavy commercial traffic.
For dinner, Weinhaus Hubertus on Florinsmarkt is one of the oldest half-timbered houses in the city. It serves traditional German food by candlelight. A glass of Terrassenmosel Riesling goes well with it.
Saturday: Schloss Stolzenfels
Spend the late morning at Schloss Stolzenfels, a castle Karl Friedrich Schinkel designed in the 1830s and 1840s for the Prussian crown prince. The frescoed halls, the Knights’ Hall and the pergola gardens climb the slope above the left bank of the Rhine, about 5 km south of the centre. Tickets are 6 EUR per adult, and the tour of the interior is in German.
Bus 670 from the main station goes to Schlossweg, followed by about 20 minutes uphill on foot. In the main season the castle opens Thursday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:00. Look at the official page for November and spring weekends.
In the afternoon, return along the Kaiserin-Augusta-Anlagen, the riverside park built between 1856 and 1861, and stop at one of its beer gardens.
Saturday evening: the view from across the water
Take the cable car to Ehrenbreitstein and look back at the Old Town and the confluence. The cable car’s last operating hour in season is 19:00, so choose a day when you can catch the light before then. A combination ticket with the fortress costs 21.90 EUR for an adult.
Where to sleep
Diehls Hotel is on Rheinsteigufer in Ehrenbreitstein, on the right bank of the Rhine, and has rooms looking over the water toward the Deutsches Eck. See the hotel site for the rooms on offer.
Sunday morning: gardens and coffee
The grounds of the Electoral Palace are free and open daily. Wander the terraced lawns and the rose beds beside the Rhine and have coffee at the Grand Cafe Schloss Koblenz.
Winter couples
From December to January Stolzenfels is closed, and the cable car is on its winter break after 1 November. Marksburg at Braubach stays open all year, from 11:00 to 16:00 in winter, with guided tours only. The right-bank train is closed until about 12 December 2026.
