Family Days in Lindos: Beach, Boat and Climb
A family day in Lindos can be easy or exhausting, and the difference is mostly timing. The village sits on the southeast coast of Rhodes, the lanes are stepped and car-free, and summer afternoons are very hot. Build the day around the water, and treat the Acropolis as a short early outing. Prices are in euros.
A day plan that works
Early morning: the Acropolis. Go when the stone is cool. The route from the village square is a steep climb of a few hundred steps and takes 10 to 25 minutes. It is polished stone, so children need closed shoes with grip, and the top has almost no shade and has drops at the edges, so keep younger children by the hand. Pushchairs cannot be used, and there is no lift. A full ticket is about €20 and a reduced one about €10, with timed entry. Entry is free for EU citizens under 25 and non-EU visitors under 18 with ID. See hhticket.gr for hours and prices.
Late morning: Lindos Main Beach. This is the organised beach on the village side, with sunbeds to rent and a gently shelving seabed, which suits young swimmers. Pallas Beach is close by. Lunch can be at a village taverna, and since many places are seasonal, check that your choice is open.
Afternoon: shade or boat. Take the break in the hottest hours. If the children want an outing, the Melani glass-bottom boat leaves from St Paul’s Bay and passes the Navarone cliffs and the caves, so children can look at the water below. Bring hats.
Evening: lanes and dinner. The village cools off after sunset. Mavrikos, a family-run restaurant since 1933, is popular, so book ahead in summer.
St Paul’s Bay with children
The bay is small and nearly enclosed, and you step into the water over rock. Water shoes help because Aegean rock holds sea urchins. Check the flags and the wind, since the meltemi can strengthen in the afternoon. Tambakio, the beach restaurant on the bay, is useful for a break. Sunbeds are paid.
Donkeys
Local donkeys are working animals that carry riders for part of the climb. Welfare groups criticise the work in summer heat, and donkey rides are not recommended for children, so walk instead.
A big day out
Faliraki WaterPark lies about 35 km north on the east coast. It is a full day for older children, and you should check its prices before you set out.
Getting around
Cars park at the edge of the village, in the Krana area. A shuttle links the car parks and the village. The KTEL bus from Rhodes Town costs €5.50 one way and stops at Krana Square, but it fills in July and August; times are on ktelrodou.gr . Luggage and buggies are awkward on the lanes, so pack light.
Heat and safety
Afternoons regularly exceed 35 C in July and August. Carry water, wear hats and use sunscreen. Keep your phone able to receive 112 alerts, because wildfire risk is high from April to October; the UK government advice covers what to do. Compare family boat trips from Lindos before booking.
