Day Trip Ideas around Hlabisa
Hlabisa sits among rolling hills on the R618, and every worthwhile outing involves a drive. The distances below come from road routing, so treat them as approximate.
The Park via Nyalazi Gate
Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park is the obvious full-day choice. Nyalazi Gate is only 21 km from the village, around half an hour, and Mpila Camp lies 39 km away. Spend the day on the roads between Mpila and Nyalazi and head out before the gates shut at about 18:00 in winter or 19:00 in summer. A day permit costs about R300 to R320 for an international adult on Ezemvelo’s 2025-26 tariff, which runs until 31 October 2026. Heavy rain can flood park roads, so ask at the gate before setting out.
St Lucia
The town of St Lucia is about 76 km from Hlabisa, so allow one hour forty each way. Two-hour boat trips on the estuary leave from the waterfront. Hippo and crocodile sightings are likely, though never promised. Each operator sets its own prices.
Hluhluwe Town, False Bay and DumaZulu
Hluhluwe town is about 57 km from Hlabisa, around 80 minutes. East of it, roughly 12 km, False Bay Park fronts Lake St Lucia. It has self-guided walking routes, among them the 9 km Dukandlovu loop, plus fossil ammonites dating back about 60 million years. Hippos and crocodiles are present, so follow the marked paths only. An iSimangaliso gate fee is payable at the entrance.
DumaZulu Traditional Village and Lodge on Bushlands Road is a commercial cultural village founded in 1994, with about 16 homesteads. Phone +27 35 562 2260 for entry prices and show times.
Mkuze
Mkuze Game Reserve is about 80 km from Hlabisa, close to two hours each way, which makes for a long day. Visitors go for the birds and the hides.
Outings That Are Too Distant
The Drakensberg, including Royal Natal National Park, is several hours away, as are Rorke’s Drift, Isandlwana and the beaches of the Durban coast. Ndumo lies roughly 200 km to the north. Durban is a drive of about three hours or more.
On the Road
Top up fuel in Mtubatuba or Hluhluwe town, since Hlabisa village is a poor place to rely on a pump. Lock your doors, keep to daylight driving and watch for cattle and walkers on country roads. Because northern KwaZulu-Natal is a seasonal malaria area, speak to a travel clinic about precautions.
