Ezemvelo Drives and St Lucia Cruises from Hlabisa
Hlabisa itself has no tour companies or ticketed sights. The organised outings people book from here are in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (HiP) and on the St Lucia estuary, and they are priced in South African rand (R).
Game Drives Run by Ezemvelo
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife offers guided drives from Mpila, in the iMfolozi sector roughly 39 km from the village, and from Hilltop in the Hluhluwe sector. The 2025-26 tariff sets the price at R420 per person, sold as R1,680 for a party of four or more. Mpila’s open-sided vehicles carry ten passengers and spend around two to two and a half hours on the road. Early outings leave at 05:00 in summer and 06:00 in winter. Sundowner drives depart at 18:00 from Monday to Saturday and at 17:00 on Sundays. Toddlers under 3 are not accepted. Reserve at the camp reception desk or by calling +27 33 845 1067.
Every guest also pays the daily conservation fee, about R300 to R320 for an international adult. That tariff year ends on 31 October 2026 and the next one starts on 1 November, so check before you leave home.
Cruises on Lake St Lucia
St Lucia town is some 76 km away, an hour and forty minutes behind the wheel. Shoreline Boat Safari, operated by Heritage Tours & Safaris, uses a shallow-draft boat seating 15 and serves tea or coffee on its two-hour trip. Call +27 35 590 1555. Advantage Tours sails a big passenger vessel with a sundeck, bar and toilets, also for two hours. Call +27 35 590 1259.
Between 15 September and 14 April Advantage boats go at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00. From 15 April to 14 September they go at 10:00, 12:00 and 15:00. Both companies set their own fares, so ask them. Hippos and crocodiles are often seen, though no company can guarantee them. From roughly November to March, Shoreline also arranges permit-only night turtle tours at Cape Vidal.
Full-Day Safari Operators
Heritage Tours & Safaris and other firms sell day-long park safaris with collection in St Lucia or Hluhluwe rather than Hlabisa. Quoted prices vary a great deal between sellers, so get the operator’s own figure.
Guided Outings at Rhino Ridge
Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge lies inside HiP. It arranges guided drives, walks and community visits for people staying there. Its minimum age is 6 for drives and 14 for walks.
Road Safety and Health
Plan your travel in daylight, because robberies and carjackings are a known risk after dark on South African roads. Northern KwaZulu-Natal has seasonal malaria, so a travel clinic can advise on tablets.
