Day Trips From Abu Dhabi: Al Ain and Beyond
Travel advisory: The UAE is dealing with the effects of a regional war that began involving Iran and the United States in 2026. From 28 February, Iranian missiles and drones were launched at the country, and fragments from intercepted missiles came down in several Abu Dhabi districts. The FCDO says attacks and counter-attacks across the region have recurred since 8 July. While the UK government does not advise against travel to the UAE, the US State Department’s rating is Level 3, “Reconsider Travel”. Out on the highways, avoid military and security installations and leave any missile or drone debris untouched. Take shelter indoors whenever the national phone alert sounds, and never film or upload strikes. Look up the latest on the UK government’s UAE advice and the US travel advisory before every trip. The suggestions below are for calm periods.
Only one excursion from Abu Dhabi works well as a same-day return, and that is Al Ain. The island-and-desert destinations to the west and south are long drives and are better treated as overnights. Prices are in dirhams (AED; about 3.67 per US dollar).
| Destination | Distance and time from Abu Dhabi | Best as |
|---|---|---|
| Al Ain | about 140 to 160 km, about 90 minutes by car | day trip |
| Sir Bani Yas Island | about 250 km, about 3 to 3.5 hours including the boat | overnight |
| Liwa Oasis and Tal Moreeb | about 250 km, 2.5 to 3 hours by road | overnight or very long day |
Summer highs run 40 to 46 degrees C, so the cooler months from November to March are far better for any of these.
Al Ain, the garden city
Al Ain’s heritage is inscribed by UNESCO as the Cultural Sites of Al Ain, listed in 2011. At the centre is the Al Ain Oasis: about 1,200 hectares, around 147,000 date palms and a functioning falaj channel. It is free, with opening hours of 9am to 7pm daily, and the paths are flat and shaded. The Visit Al Ain page has the details.
Several guides describe Al Ain Palace Museum and Al Jahili Fort as free, but opening hours are reported inconsistently, so confirm them on the day. Al Ain Museum costs about AED 47 for adults. Al Ain Zoo calls itself the largest zoo in the Middle East, and you should read its prices on its own site. Wadi Adventure is also in Al Ain, with prices and hours that differ between sources.
Jebel Hafeet
The road to the summit is about 11.7 km of tarmac rising to roughly 1,249 m, free to drive and open 24 hours. Do not use the upper section after dark, because it has no lighting. Expect cooler, windier weather at the top, where the Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet stands. The Hafit tombs from the Bronze Age at the foot of the mountain belong to the UNESCO site. More on UAE Inform .
Reaching Al Ain without a car
The X90 express bus takes about 2 hours, and fares quoted range from about AED 25 to 30. Check admobility.gov.ae for the timetable. For a guided day, see Abu Dhabi day trip tours .
Sir Bani Yas Island
There is no general entry charge for the island. After the roughly 2-hour drive to the Jebel Dhanna jetty, a free speedboat crosses to the island. Resort-run wildlife drives cost about AED 200 to 300 per person. The 87 sq km Royal Nature Reserve has free-roaming cheetahs and giraffes, but a return trip in one day is tight, so book a night. See the Visit Abu Dhabi island page .
Liwa and Tal Moreeb
Liwa lies about 250 km south, and a paved road runs about 25 km further to Tal Moreeb. Carry water and plan to sleep over.
What stays in the city
Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Grand Mosque, Qasr Al Watan and Yas Island are city sights, not day trips.
