Travel advisory: Dubai and the wider UAE were caught up in the 2026 regional conflict with Iran. During a roughly six-week phase in early 2026, Iranian drones and missiles struck sites in the UAE, including near Dubai’s airport and port and a hotel on Palm Jumeirah. A ceasefire has held since April, and Dubai’s flights, hotels, and attractions are operating and recovering, though the situation stays fluid (the current risk is mainly to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, not the city). The US State Department has the UAE at “Reconsider Travel” and the UK FCDO does not advise against travel, but both flag the regional situation. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking, and again before you fly. Everything below is written for a normal visit, for when it’s calm.

Using Dubai as a cheap base for the whole UAE
Dubai isn’t actually the UAE’s capital, that’s Abu Dhabi, about 1.5 hours down the highway, and that single fact is the key to this guide: Dubai makes an excellent, well-connected base for day trips across the country without ever changing hotels. Prices below use the dirham’s fixed peg (AED 3.6725 to $1, unchanged since 1997), so the USD figures are firm. Day trips from Dubai, cheaply
- Abu Dhabi (about 1.5 hours). The actual UAE capital, and worth a full day: the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (allow 60-90 minutes, robes provided at no cost for visitors who need them), the Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island, Qasr Al Watan (the Presidential Palace), and Ferrari World or the wider Yas Island theme parks if you want a splurge day. - Sharjah (about 25-45 minutes). The closest day trip and the UAE’s designated “Cultural Capital of the Arab World”: the Museum of Islamic Civilization, a walkable heritage area, and its own souqs, all considerably cheaper than Dubai’s equivalents.
- Hatta (about 90 minutes). Dubai’s own mountain exclave in the Hajar Mountains, genuinely part of the emirate despite the distance: Hatta Dam’s turquoise reservoir for kayaking, the Heritage Village, and hiking or biking trails through the Wadi Hub.
- East Coast / Fujairah (about 1.5-2 hours). The Gulf of Oman coast on the country’s other side: Snoopy Island for snorkeling, Fujairah Fort, and Al-Bidyah Mosque, the UAE’s oldest, dating to around 1446.
- Al Ain (about 1.5-2 hours). The “Garden City”: Al Ain Oasis, a UNESCO site you can walk for free, and Jebel Hafeet, a scenic mountain drive with sweeping views at the top.
Getting from Dubai to each day trip
A rental car is the most flexible option for Hatta, the east coast, and Al Ain, all mountain or coastal routes that reward having your own timing; check current rental rates on Discover Cars before you commit. For Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, a guided day tour or shared transport is usually simpler than driving, since both cities have their own traffic to navigate. Whatever the destination, build in extra time during summer, the heat makes any roadside stop longer than planned.
Where to stay for a Dubai-as-base trip

Cheap, largely yes, Sharjah and Hatta both cost little beyond transport, and even Abu Dhabi’s Grand Mosque is free to enter.
