Day Trips From Frankfurt by Train: Four Towns
Day Trips From Frankfurt by Train: Four Towns
Four towns make easy days from Frankfurt, and they combine into three plans: two cities in one day, one castle town, or a Rhine day built around a cable car. Trains are the way to go, since each town sits within about 70 minutes of the Hauptbahnhof.
Plan one: Mainz and Wiesbaden in a day
Mainz takes 30 to 40 minutes on the S8, and Wiesbaden, 35 to 45 minutes on the S1 or S8, is often combined with it. Start with Mainz Cathedral, then see the Chagall windows in St. Stephan. The Gutenberg Museum is in an interim exhibition at Reichklarastraße 1 while its old home is rebuilt, so look at mainz.de before you go. Finish in Wiesbaden at the Kurhaus, then take the Nerobergbahn funicular up to the vineyards and the Russian Orthodox church. The funicular runs until 1 November 2026, every 15 minutes from 09:00 to 19:00, and timetables are at eswe-verkehr.de . The Deutschlandticket (€63 a month) covers the regional and S-Bahn trains on both lines, and zone details for day tickets are on rmv.de .
Plan two: Heidelberg
Heidelberg is the classic choice for a day away, with direct ICE trains in about 50 minutes. Fares are on bahn.de and are not covered by the Deutschlandticket. The route goes Alte Brücke, Altstadt, the funicular to the red-sandstone castle ruins, the German Pharmacy Museum and the world’s largest wine barrel. The Philosophenweg on the opposite bank is a gentle walk with views of the castle against the wooded hills.
Plan three: the Rhine at Rüdesheim
The RB10 leaves hourly and reaches Rüdesheim am Rhein in 1 hour 10. The Deutschlandticket covers it. From the station, walk Drosselgasse, then take the cable car to the Niederwalddenkmal. It costs €12 return for adults and €6 for children aged 5 to 15, and runs from 21 March to 1 November 2026. After that the line closes from 2 to 18 November and reopens from 19 November to 23 December for the Christmas market.
The river itself needs a caveat. Rhine cruises can be suspended when the river runs low, as in autumn 2026, so check KD or Bingen-Rüdesheimer before you travel. Plan the day as a train ride, a cable car and the viewpoints, with a boat as a bonus if sailings run.
Before you go
Carry some cash for small cafes and ticket machines. Pickpockets favour the Hauptbahnhof concourse and busy platforms. If you want a booked tour with transport, you can search Frankfurt day tours on Viator . The activities page lists what to do on the days you stay in the city.
Tip: choose Heidelberg for a full day away from the city, and Mainz plus Wiesbaden when you want two smaller towns and a funicular.
