Day Trips Out of Baku: Gobustan, Absheron, Shamakhi
Check the official advice first. The British FCDO recommends against all travel within 5 km of Azerbaijan’s border with Armenia, and against all but essential travel to the south-western districts of the 2020 and 2023 fighting (the Karabakh area), where landmines and unexploded munitions remain. The US advisory is Level 3, Reconsider Travel. Land crossings with Armenia and Russia are closed, while airports operate normally. None of the day trips below goes near those districts. Read gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you leave home.
Baku makes a good base for short excursions, but only a few destinations suit a single day. Here is the quick comparison, with one-way times by road and fees in manat (AZN) for a foreign adult, at about 1.70 to the US dollar.
- Ateshgah and Yanar Dag: 30 to 45 minutes each, 15 AZN each.
- Gobustan: about 1 hour, about 10 AZN.
- Shamakhi and Maraza: about 2 hours, 15 AZN at Diri Baba.
- Quba and the Red Village: 2.5 to 4 hours, a long day.
Gobustan rock art and mud volcanoes
The UNESCO reserve sits 60 to 70 km south-west of Baku and holds more than 6,000 carvings. The ticket is about 10 AZN, though a few listings quote 15, and sources differ on hours, so confirm locally and plan to arrive by about 15:00. The Gaval Dash stone stands at the entrance. Never climb, touch or chalk the carvings, and keep to the marked trails. Bring water, because there is no shade or food on site.
For the Dashgil mud volcanoes, 12 km beyond, the unpaved track needs a 4x4, and ordinary taxis tend to stop at the visitor area. Bus 195 from 20 Yanvar metro takes 1.5 to 2 hours to the highway junction rather than the gate.
Absheron fire sites
Yanar Dag is a gas fire along a low hillside at Mammadli village, open daily 10:00 to 19:00; the reserve page has the rules. The Ateshgah fire temple is in Surakhani. A combined ticket for both is 25 AZN, and 35 AZN with the Mud Volcanoes Tourism Complex, valid for 72 hours from first entry. The Gala open-air reserve on the peninsula shows traditional Absheron life.
Shamakhi and Maraza
Shamakhi lies about 120 km west of Baku. Its Juma Mosque is a large rebuilt mosque, and modest dress is expected. Near Maraza, the 15th-century Diri Baba Mausoleum clings to a cliff. Plan about two hours each way.
Quba and the Red Village
Quba, 170 km north, is reached in 2.5 to 4 hours by car or bus. Across the Qudiyalchay river, the Red Village is a Mountain Jewish settlement with the Six Dome Synagogue and a museum, and the museum arranges visits to working synagogues. Because the drive is long, many travellers sleep a night in Quba instead.
Trips that need a night
Sheki is 283 km away, a bus ride of 6 to 6.5 hours. Gabala takes 3.5 to 4 hours by road, Naftalan 4 to 5 hours and Ganja 5 to 5.5 hours by train. Treat these as overnight trips. Karabakh is not a day trip and needs an official permit.
