Multi-Day Armenia: Yerevan, Goris, Dilijan, Lori
Travel advice: UK FCDO guidance covers parts of Armenia. It advises against all travel within 5 km of the whole eastern border with Azerbaijan, and along the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan. The US advisory is Level 2 and says not to travel to the Azerbaijan border region. The routes below are away from those zones. Read the current wording at gov.uk and travel.state.gov . On the southern and northern legs keep to main roads and avoid side roads toward the border.
Armenia works best as a hub-and-spoke trip: base in Yerevan, then add one or two nights further out. Costs are in Armenian dram (AMD), at roughly 370 to 390 AMD to the dollar, and fares are approximate.
Option 1: Yerevan hub, 4 to 5 nights
Sleep in Yerevan and make three day trips: Garni and Geghard (45 to 60 minutes), Khor Virap with Areni and Noravank (about 2 hours each way, a full day) and Echmiadzin (30 to 40 minutes). Fill the remaining days with city museums, remembering that the Matenadaran and the History Museum are closed on Mondays.
Option 2: add Goris and Tatev, 2 nights
The route south is the longest, so it is the one to stretch over a night.
- Getting there: a Goris minibus takes 4.5 to 5 hours and costs roughly 3,000 to 4,000 AMD; check the departure point on the day. Tatev has no direct service from Yerevan, so you add a taxi from Goris to the Halidzor cable car station.
- The ride: the Wings of Tatev covers 5,752 m in about 12 minutes. March to November fares are 6,500 AMD one way and 9,000 AMD return; December to February fares are 4,000 and 5,500 AMD. It is shut on Mondays and in poor weather.
- Tatev Monastery: free to enter.
- Road advice: the cable car and the Goris to Halidzor road are the usual route. Do not drive on toward the border.
A same-day trip from Yerevan means 9 to 11 hours of driving, which is why the overnight is recommended. Check the cable car’s site before you commit.
Option 3: Sevan and Dilijan, 1 to 2 nights
Stop at Sevanavank, then continue to Dilijan, a forested town in Tavush province. Haghartsin and Goshavank are the main monasteries, and the walk from Lake Parz to Goshavank is about 6.5 km and 2.5 hours, described as easy by hiking guides. Lake water is cool to cold and the wind can pick up quickly. Dilijan lies far from the road the UK advises against, between Ijevan and Noyemberyan.
Option 4: Lori loop, 1 to 2 nights
Haghpat and Sanahin, two UNESCO monasteries 16 km apart, can be visited without an entry fee according to secondary sources. Add rafting on the Debed (12,000 AMD per person for 11 km, minimum age 14, roughly May to autumn) with Rafting Armenia . Stay in Alaverdi or Dilijan.
Option 5: Gyumri, 1 night
Trains take about 3 hours and cost roughly 1,300 to 2,500 AMD. The timetable was revised in September 2026, so read railway.am before travelling.
Choosing your length
- 7 to 10 days: Yerevan hub plus one extra region. Ten days comfortably adds Goris and Tatev.
- Under 5 days: keep the sights near Yerevan and leave Tatev out.
Rail does not reach Tatev, Goris, Dilijan or Jermuk, and the Turkish and Azerbaijani land borders are closed. Georgia and Iran are the open crossings. Compare Yerevan hotels on Booking.com .
