Day Trips Out of Sarajevo by Train and Bus
Sarajevo has few easy day trips. The surrounding terrain is mountainous, rail lines are limited and many outings take half a day in transit. The ones below are the realistic choices, with the checks you should make before leaving. Prices are in convertible marks (BAM).
Mostar by train
The Federation railway (ŽFBH) runs a scenic line from Sarajevo down the Neretva valley. The morning departure is at about 07:15, and Mostar is reached around 09:15, roughly 2 hours later. Coming back, trains leave in the late afternoon or evening. The service is not clearly daily, a reserved seat is reportedly required and fares are unconfirmed, so check zfbh.ba or ask at the station. The bus is the fallback.
In Mostar, the Old Bridge, the Crooked Bridge and the bazaar lanes fill a day. In summer, local divers leap from the Old Bridge for tips.
Konjic
Konjic lies about 50 km south and can be reached in about an hour by road. Its main draw is ARK D-0, the Yugoslav-era atomic command bunker cut into a mountain. Entry is by guided tour only, booked ahead, and lasts around 90 minutes. Price and times differ between sources, so confirm them with the organiser.
Neretva rafting also starts here between May and October. Operators price trips at about 41 to 75 euros per person. Mines remain in the countryside around former front lines in Bosnia. Stay on roads, trails and routes run by licensed operators, and never go into abandoned buildings.
Vrelo Bosne at Ilidža
The quickest outing is by tram 3 to Ilidža, about 45 minutes, then on foot or by horse carriage to the springs. Tickets for foreign visitors are 6 BAM for adults and 3 BAM for ages 6 to 18. The park has no boats for hire.
Travnik
Travnik was the seat of Ottoman governors and has a fortress, a painted mosque called Šarena Džamija and the Plava Voda springs. Buses from Sarajevo take around 90 minutes. Timetables should be checked at the bus station.
Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial
The memorial lies 120 to 135 km from Sarajevo, about 2.5 to 3 hours each way. It honours the more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys killed in July 1995. Treat it as a full day devoted to remembrance and not as an extra. Entry is free, and hours are reported as roughly 08:00 to 16:00. Guided tours from the city have been reported at about 120 BAM. It is not a suitable outing for small children, and quiet, respectful dress is expected.
Longer journeys
There is no coast within a day, and the Tara river rafting is a much longer journey via Foča or Montenegro. The Miljacka in the city is far too shallow for boating.
Booking help
For rafting and general excursions, Sarajevo day trips shows some operators. The railway and the bus station remain the best source of timetables.
