Sarajevo Activities: Coffee, Cable Car and Forts
Sarajevo is a small capital in a mountain bowl, and a good first visit mixes the old bazaar with one trip up to the ridge. All prices are in convertible marks (BAM), which are tied to the euro at about 1.96 to 1. Carry cash for cafes and bakeries, and watch your pockets on crowded streets. The US State Department lists the country at Level 2 for crime, landmines and terrorism.
Ride up Mount Trebević
The gondola leaves from Bistrik, near the City Hall, and climbs to Vidikovac in roughly seven minutes. Tourists pay 20 BAM for a return ticket or 15 BAM one way, and under-sevens go free. Opening times shift with the season and the line is sometimes shut for servicing, so look at zicara.ba on the day.
A short paved path from the top station reaches the graffiti-covered concrete track built for the 1984 Winter Olympics. It has broken edges, loose debris and no handrails. Good soles help, and snow or darkness make it a poor idea. The war left mines in woods and ridges around the city, so keep to marked paths and paved areas, avoid abandoned buildings, and bring a local guide for any route that is not signed.
Coffee and street food
Bosnian coffee arrives in a copper pot with a small cup, a glass of water and a piece of lokum. Plan on about 3 to 4 BAM. Čajdžinica Džirlo, at Kovači 16, is a well-known tea house and takes cash only.
Ćevapi are grilled mince sausages tucked into flatbread with chopped onion and kajmak, a soft cream. Željo and Petica Ferhatović are the two names most guides give, with a plate running about 10 to 14 BAM. For a cheaper stop, bakeries sell burek, the coiled pastry, by weight with a pot of yoghurt.
Evening at the Yellow Fortress
The Yellow Fortress is a free bastion from the 1700s on the slope above the old town. It is open around the clock and fills with locals at dusk. The way up is a steep walk past a hillside cemetery, so be quiet there.
A green break at Vrelo Bosne
Tram 3 takes about 45 minutes from Baščaršija to Ilidža, and the springs are a pleasant walk or carriage ride beyond. A foreign adult ticket is 6 BAM, with a reduced 3 BAM rate for children from 6 to 18. The park is flat, with streams and footbridges.
Museums
The National Museum on Zmaja od Bosne charges about 20 BAM for adults and is shut on Mondays. The War Childhood Museum and the Vijećnica are open daily. Details for each are on warchildhood.org and vijecnica.ba .
