Tunnel Museum, Galerija 11/07/95 and Museums
Many of Sarajevo’s most visited places record the siege of 1992 to 1996, the longest siege of a capital in modern warfare. This page gives hours, prices and logistics for them in a plain tone, alongside the National Museum. Prices are in convertible marks (BAM). Several desks accept only cash.
The Tunnel Museum at Butmir
A hand-dug passage ran under the airport runway here in 1993 and carried food, fuel and the wounded in and out of the city. The museum sits in the family house at its entrance, about 12 km west of the old town. You see the damaged facade, short films, tools and uniforms, and you can walk a preserved stretch of roughly 20 to 25 metres.
Adults pay about 20 BAM and students about 8 BAM, in cash. An audio guide costs extra. Reported hours are around 08:30 to 17:30 from April to October and 09:00 to 16:00 from November to March, but the official website was unreachable at last check, so phone or confirm locally. The usual route is tram 3 to Ilidža, then bus 32 or a short taxi ride.
War Childhood Museum
At Logavina 32, this museum shows toys, diaries, letters and short written memories from people who were children in the war. It is quiet and personal. Opening hours are 11:00 to 19:00 every day, with last entry at 18:30. Tickets are 15 BAM for adults, 12 BAM for university students and 7 BAM for ages 6 to 17, and under-fives enter free. Entry is free on the last Thursday of the month from 17:00 to 19:00. The museum is closed on 1 January, 1 March, 1 May and 25 November. See warchildhood.org .
Galerija 11/07/95
This gallery by the Sacred Heart Cathedral is a memorial to the victims of the Srebrenica genocide, in which more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were killed in July 1995. It is open daily from 09:00 to 21:00 per galerija110795.ba . A ticket of about 12 BAM with a guide has been reported, though the official site gives no price, so check at the door. Silence is expected inside.
Memorial stops on the street
Zmaja od Bosne, the long boulevard through the city, was called Sniper Alley in the siege. In pavements around town, red resin fills the scars left by mortar shells that killed civilians. Each Sarajevo Rose is a memorial. Walk around them rather than over them.
National Museum
The National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, opened in 1888, is a set of pavilions around a botanical garden. Adults pay about 20 BAM, students 10 BAM, and ages 6 to 18 pay 2 BAM. The museum is closed on Mondays. The Sarajevo Haggadah, a medieval Jewish manuscript, is displayed in its own room on a limited schedule, so ask the museum for viewing times first.
Making a day of it
Group the stops by area: the War Childhood Museum and the gallery are both near the old town, while the Tunnel Museum needs a half day. For a different pace, browse Sarajevo museum and city tours to compare general city guides with what you would do alone.
