Three Day Zurich and Central Switzerland Plan
Zurich has no packaged multi-day tour circuit of its own, so a longer stay is built from separate pieces. The city holds a couple of days, and the trains open up central and northern Switzerland. Prices are in Swiss francs (CHF).
A three day outline
Day one stays in Zurich: the Old Town, the Fraumünster windows, a lake cruise and an evening at a thermal bath. Day two heads to Lucerne and Rigi. Day three suits the Rhine Falls and Schaffhausen, or Stein am Rhein, or a slower return to Zurich for the Kunsthaus and Zürich-West. The 3 day plan has a fuller version.
Central Switzerland from Zurich
Lucerne is 41 to 50 minutes away by fast train. Rigi works as a loop: train to Arth-Goldau, mountain railway to the summit at 1,797 m, then down to Vitznau and a boat back to Lucerne. A Swiss Travel Pass covers all of it. Without the pass, the Vitznau to Rigi Kulm return is about CHF 55.
The north and the Rhine
Rhine Falls is about 50 minutes by train, and entry to the Schloss Laufen path, platform and lift is CHF 5 for adults. Stein am Rhein, in the canton of Schaffhausen, takes about 1 hour 10 minutes.
Jungfrau and Titlis
These are not good additions to a Zurich stay. Jungfraujoch as a packaged day costs from about CHF 290 and is exhausting. If either peak is the aim, plan a night in Interlaken or near Titlis instead, then return to Zurich.
Choosing a pass
A Swiss Travel Pass suits several long rail days. The Zürich Card at CHF 29 for 24 hours or CHF 56 for 72 hours covers local transport and many museums, and it is worthwhile only on days with several paid entries. It excludes the Felsenegg cable car and the long Rapperswil cruise.
Budget
City fares rise slightly on 13 December 2026. A single city ticket is about CHF 4.70 until then and a 24-hour ticket about CHF 9.40.
Where to sleep
Staying in Zurich for every night is simplest, because the main station is the hub for every trip above and luggage can stay in one hotel. Lucerne is the one place where a night away pays off, since an early start on Rigi avoids the busiest hours.
Seasonal notes
The river and lake baths are closed outside summer, boat services run on reduced timetables in winter, and the Limmat boat can pause in low water. Plan indoor options such as the Landesmuseum, Kunsthaus and Hürlimannbad for the colder days, and keep the Rigi and Rhine Falls days for clear weather.
