Zurich Landmarks: Chagall Windows and Old Town
Zurich’s main sights cluster on both banks of the Limmat, so a day on foot covers most of them. Entry charges are in Swiss francs (CHF) and several sights are free with a Zürich Card, which costs CHF 29 for 24 hours or CHF 56 for 72 hours.
Grossmünster tower
Zwingli preached the Reformation here from 1519. Walking into the church and crypt costs nothing. The Karlsturm adds a 187-step climb to a glazed platform with six big windows (the terraces are closed for safety), priced at CHF 5 for adults and CHF 2 for children and students. Hours are 10:00 to 18:00 Monday to Saturday in the warmer months and until 17:00 from November to February. Works on the building run until about 2029.
Fraumünster
On Münsterhof, this former abbey dates back to 853. Chagall made its five choir windows in 1970, and Augusto Giacometti made the rose window in the north transept in 1945. Admission is about CHF 5, with children and students free. Photography is restricted, so follow the posted signs, and respect services.
Kunsthaus Zürich
The largest art museum in the country has Giacometti sculptures, Hodler and Vallotton paintings, Monet’s water lilies and a Chipperfield extension from 2021. Opening hours are 10:00 to 18:00, with a late evening to 20:00 on Thursday, and it is closed on Mondays. A full ticket is about CHF 31. One collection on show, Bührle, has a disputed history, and the display is being reworked ahead of a new presentation in 2027 or 2028.
Landesmuseum
Located right behind the station, this castle-like museum on Museumstrasse covers Swiss history. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:00. Tickets are CHF 13 now, rising to CHF 18 from 5 January 2027 when children and teenagers under 18 get in free. The first-floor “Simply Zurich” section costs nothing.
Lindenhof
A free hilltop terrace over the river, once a Roman fort, with giant chess boards and a classic view toward the Old Town.
A note on the Sechseläuten
The spring festival is planned for 19 April 2027, when the Landesmuseum is closed.
Getting between the sights
The Grossmünster, Fraumünster and Lindenhof are a few minutes’ walk apart across the Münsterbrücke. The Kunsthaus is a short tram ride from the Old Town, and the Landesmuseum sits next to the main station. A single city ticket is about CHF 4.70 and fares rise slightly on 13 December 2026. A 24-hour pass is about CHF 9.40.
A suggested order
Begin at the Landesmuseum when it opens, walk over the river to the Grossmünster for the tower, cross to the Fraumünster for the windows, and finish on the Lindenhof. Keep the Kunsthaus for a Thursday evening, when it stays open until 20:00.
