Ecuador Day Trips by Bus, Tour and Taxi
Safety notice for travellers, October 2026: Check two government sources before booking Ecuador: the UK FCDO page and the US State Department advisory . At the time of writing the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the coastal provinces of Esmeraldas, Manabí, Santa Elena, Guayas, El Oro, Los Ríos and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas (airside transit at Guayaquil airport is excepted) and to the 20 km Colombian border strip, which takes in Lago Agrio. The US rates the country Level 2 overall, with Level 3 and Level 4 areas named inside it. A 60-day state of exception that began on 15 September 2026 covers eight provinces, Pichincha and Quito among them, and curfews have returned more than once this year. The highlands, Cuenca and the Galápagos fall outside the FCDO regions. Even there, plan around muggings, bag snatching, express kidnapping after street-hailed taxis and heavy El Niño rain and landslides. Everything on this page concerns places outside the warned areas.
Quito is the best base for day trips in Ecuador, with Cuenca a second option for travellers in the south. The table of options below gives each trip’s rough travel time and the main cost, mostly taken from operator and press listings, so confirm locally. During the rainy season, normally October to May, landslides can close mountain roads, and an El Niño is forecast for 2026-27. Travel back before dark.

Cotopaxi
No public bus enters the park, so join a tour or hire a taxi or a 4x4 pickup at the highway. You register with rangers at the gate and carry your passport, and entry is reported to be free. The car park is at about 4,500 m, well above Quito’s 2,850 m, so walk slowly and descend if you feel a headache, vomiting, confusion or breathlessness at rest. See IG-EPN before you set out, because access can change at short notice.
Otavalo and Mindo
Otavalo’s big day is Saturday, with an early animal market and a second busy market on Wednesday. Mindo has only a few buses a day from La Ofelia, so fix your return time. Its butterfly farm costs about US$8 and a chocolate tour about US$10. Cock-of-the-rock viewings are sold by guides but never guaranteed.
Mitad del Mundo
The complex opens 09:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and 09:00 to 18:00 at weekends, with child tickets at US$2.50. Check the official site . Reach it by Metro and bus or by taxi.
Quilotoa
Count this as a very long day, since you add roughly two hours beyond Latacunga. The crater walk takes 30 to 45 minutes down and 60 to 120 minutes back up at about 3,900 m, and the village has no ATMs.
From Cuenca
Cajas National Park is reported to allow free day entry with registration at Toreadora. Ingapirca is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Not suitable as day trips
Guayaquil, Puerto López and Lago Agrio do not work as day trips from Quito. The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to those provinces and the border strip around Lago Agrio.
